The Green Bay Gamblers closed out February with a statement win Saturday night, defeating the Youngstown Phantoms 5-3 at the Resch Center to secure a weekend split.
After falling in a shootout Friday, Green Bay responded by handing first-place Youngstown a regulation loss in front of 8,053 fans.
The Phantoms struck twice in the opening seven minutes, including a power-play goal at 5:50, to take an early 2-0 lead. Green Bay answered quickly. Conboy cut the deficit to one just 45 seconds later off a setup from Wooten, and Kasper Katz tied the game at 15:52 with a power-play goal assisted by Gulley and Carcone.
Green Bay scored twice on the power play in the opening 4:17 of the second frame. Youngstown answered with a power-play goal midway through the period, but Green Bay carried a 4-3 lead into the third.
Despite being outshot 38-21 in the game, the Gamblers got a strong performance from Raul Henriquez, who stopped 35 shots. Wooten sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:52.
Green Bay finished a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play while killing off five of seven Youngstown opportunities.
With the victory, the Gamblers finish February with a weekend split against the league leaders and continue to build momentum heading into March.
