First-half run by Vikings too much for Phoenix men

Green Bay traded home court at the Kress for the Resch Friday and grabbed a 17-16 lead midway through the first half, but the floodgates soon opened for Cleveland State as they went on a 23-7 run to break the game open.

The Phoenix closed the gap to 12 heading into halftime down 39-27. UWGB would outscore the Vikings in the second half, 55-50, but it wasn't enough to overcome the big first half run and they fell 89-82.

It's the second time in two weeks the two teams met with Green Bay taking game one on January 15. Preston Ruedinger finished with 23 points in both games causing the Vikings problems, but this time Cleveland State overcame it with four players finishing over 15 points including team leader Dayan Nessah with 18 and 9 rebounds.

The big difference came on offense as Cleveland State shot over 50% from the field and three-point range including 16-29 from the arc and UWGB was below both thresholds and 13-27 on triples.

Green Bay will try to regroup returning to the Resch Center Sunday facing off against Wright State with tip-off at 1 p.m.

Phoenix men change backdrop for Cleveland State, Wright State

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team will play their first Resch Center games of the season beginning on Friday night when they welcome Cleveland State to Titletown.

Last Saturday, a 12-0 run — capped by back-to-back Caden Wilkins 3-pointers — thwarted a comeback attempt by the Colonials after an early surge gave them a 41-40 lead. Robert Morris had trailed 40-33 at halftime. The Colonials hit several late 3-pointers to trim the lead and keep the game in doubt, but the Phoenix held on for the win. C.J. O’Hara led Green Bay with 18 points, while Wilkins and Justin Allen each scored 17.

Head coach Doug Gottlieb, who advocated for more games at the Kress Events Center for financial and logistical reasons, was complimentary of the Resch Center and its staff for making the arena feel like home. "The guys like shooting here, playing here. It's cool. I mean, this is a really nice venue. For a school of our level, this is as good a venue as you are going to have in the country."

The Vikings come into Friday's 6 p.m. game with a 7-14 record fresh off of an upset of the Phoenix's Sunday 1 p.m. opponent Wright State. At just under 38 percent, the Vikings lead the conference in three-point shooting. The Raiders are among the Horizon League leaders with an 8-2 mark (13-8 overall), thanks to a stout defense that leads the conference in fewest points allowed.

Double-doubles lead Phoenix women past Raiders

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team used a 16-0 run stretching across two periods to guide them to a 66-52 win over Wright State on Thursday.

In addition to the extended run, the Phoenix's defense turned it up a notch, forcing several shot clock violations and caused 13 turnovers including seven steals.

Double-doubles from Jenna Guyer (20 points and 10 rebounds) and Maddy Skorupski (10 points and 11 rebounds) paced the attack for the Phoenix while Meghan Schultz added 12 points.

After winning their 10th straight game overall and their 13th in the Horizon League, the Phoenix are off until they start a three-game road trip at Robert Morris on Thursday. Game time is at 10 a.m.

In their last game, the Phoenix used a 21-10 first quarter to secure their 12th straight Horizon League victory. Slim edges in rebounds (37-34) and forced turnovers (19-16) helped Green Bay fend off any comeback attempts by the Titans. Maddy Skorupski led the Phoenix with 22 points, while Jenna Guyer and Meghan Schultz each chipped in 11.

The Raiders are 6-15 and 2-8 in Horizon League play heading into Thursday's contest. They are trying to snap a five-game losing skid.

Blizzard sign quarterback Dimilon Brown

The Green Bay Blizzard continues to make roster updates in preparation for the upcoming 2026 IFL season. The Blizzard have signed quarterback Dimilon Brown, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound signal-caller.

Brown played collegiately at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, a Division II program in the Great American Conference.

In 44 games at UAM, Brown recorded 7,343 passing yards, 53 passing touchdowns, 3,187 rushing yards, and 37 rushing touchdowns. He also caught one pass for seven yards. In 2019, Brown was named GAC Freshman of the Year and earned Division II Top Performer honors. He is UAM’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns and ranks in the top five in passing yards.

Steelers Hire Former Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy

The Pittsburgh Steelers have named former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, bringing one of the NFL’s most accomplished modern coaches back to the sidelines, and rekindling a familiar connection for fans in Green Bay and Door County.

McCarthy, who maintained a residence in Egg Harbor during his tenure with the Packers, was often seen enjoying the area’s quiet charm during offseasons. His ties to the peninsula made him a familiar figure in Door County while he guided Green Bay through one of the franchise’s most successful eras.

From 2006 to 2018, McCarthy compiled a 125–77–2 regular season record with the Packers and led the team to nine playoff appearances. His crowning achievement came in 2010, when Green Bay captured Super Bowl XLV beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. Interestingly, the very team he now leads. Under McCarthy, quarterback Aaron Rodgers developed into a future Hall of Famer and multiple-time MVP, cementing the Packers as perennial contenders.

For Door County residents, the hire carries a hometown flavor. Many remember McCarthy as more than a Super Bowl coach; he was a quiet neighbor, boating and dining locally during Door County summers. Now, as he begins a new chapter in Pittsburgh, his legacy in Green Bay, and in Door County, remains firmly intact.

Phoenix basketball teams sweep action Saturday

Green Bay Phoenix fans were treated to a pair of wins Saturday, with the men avenging an earlier-season loss to Robert Morris with a 71-67 victory and the women cruising to a 72-61 win over Detroit Mercy.

In Moon Township, Pennsylvania, a 12-0 run — capped by back-to-back Cadebn Wilkins 3-pointers — thwarted a comeback attempt by the Colonials after an early surge gave them a 41-40 lead.

At the Kress Events Center, the Phoenix used a 21-10 first quarter to secure their 12th straight Horizon League victory. Slim edges in rebounds (37-34) and forced turnovers (19-16) helped Green Bay fend off any comeback attempts by the Titans. Maddy Skorupski led the Phoenix with 22 points, while Jenna Guyer and Meghan Schultz each chipped in 11.

The Phoenix women return to the Kress on Thursday against Wright State, while the men make their Resch Center debut Friday against Cleveland State.

Gamblers split weekend set

Three was the magic number this weekend at the Resch Center, with the Muskegon Lumberjacks winning the first game 3-2 and the Green Bay Gamblers taking the second game 3-1.

In Friday’s matchup, the Gamblers gave up three unanswered goals after Andrew O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a first-period tally. Gunnar Conboy scored with just under seven minutes remaining to pull the Gamblers closer, but not close enough to force overtime. Leo Henriquez stopped 23 of 26 shots in the loss.

In Saturday’s contest, Cruz Martin kicked off the scoring in the first period before the Lumberjacks tied the game early in the second period. David Rozsíval tallied the eventual game-winner about two minutes later, and Zach Wooten put the game on ice with an empty-netter. Henriquez bounced back in the second game, stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced.

The Gamblers are back in action Saturday at 6:05 p.m. when they welcome Dubuque.

Report: Packers hire former Cardinals HC as new defensive coordinator

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly made their decision on a replacement for Jeff Hafley, naming former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon as their new defensive coordinator.

Gannon is coming off a forgettable tenure as the Cardinals’ head coach, going 15-36 in three seasons at the helm. He earned the job after a successful run as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator. In his final year, the Eagles finished as the eighth-best defense en route to a Super Bowl run that saw them come up just short of a championship.

Gamblers host back-to-back games against Lumberjacks

The Green Bay Gamblers are preparing for a busy weekend as they host back-to-back home games against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

The Gamblers’ last outing saw them defeat the U.S. National Team Development Program 4-3 in a shootout. Green Bay jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Gavin Katz, David Rozsíval and William Samuelsson. The NTDP rallied to force a shootout, where Katz and Geno Carcone scored to secure the victory.

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team could never quite get over the hump in its 88-81 loss to Youngstown State on Thursday night.

The Penguins hit 16 three-pointers in the game, including a 7-4 edge in the first half that proved to be the difference in the game. The Phoenix found themselves in a 27-18 deficit before a 9-0 run tied the game. The Penguins grabbed the lead back with a run of their own to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room. They would later extend that lead out to 16 before the Phoenix slowly reeled them back in before running out of time.

C.J. O'Hara led the Phoenix with 22 points, while Marcus Hall pitched in 20 points and Justin Allen chipped in 14 points. Cris Carroll hit eight three-pointers en route to a game-high 34 points for the Penguins.

Phoenix women keep streaking in conference with Oakland win

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in their latest Horizon League win, this time beating Oakland 73-59.

The two teams played relatively even the final three quarters, but a 21-9 start to the contest gave the Phoenix an advantage they would not give up. The Golden Grizzlies outrebounded the Phoenix 43-33, but turning the ball over 21 times ended up being their demise.

The Phoenix had three players score in double figures, led by Maddy Skorupski's 19 points. Carley Duffney scored 12 points, and Jenna Guyer added 10 points in the way. Former Oconto standout Lianna Baxter led the Golden Grizzlies with 16 points.

Packers, LaFleur agree to multiyear contract extension

The Green Bay Packers have agreed to a multiyear contract extension with head coach Matt LaFleur, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. LaFleur’s previous contract was set to expire after this season. Pelissero also reported the Packers are expected to extend contracts for general manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president Russ Ball.

Questions had surfaced about LaFleur’s future in Green Bay after the Packers dropped their final five games, including blowing a 21-3 halftime lead in a Wild Card playoff loss to the Chicago Bears.

LaFleur has spent seven seasons as the Packers’ head coach, compiling a 76-40-1 record. He has led Green Bay to three NFC North titles, six playoff appearances and two trips to the NFC Championship Game.

Golden Grizzlies snap Phoenix men's winning streak

An 11-2 Oakland run to start the second half all but spelled the end of the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team's five-game winning streak as they lost to the Golden Grizzlies 88-63.

The Golden Grizzlies shot a blistering 54 percent from the field and outrebounded the Phoenix 42-24 to hold the control over the game. An 8-0 run late in the first half gave Phoenix fans hope for another come-from-behind victory as they narrowed a 30-19 deficit to 37-31 at the break. The hope was short-lived as the Golden Grizzlies outscored the Phoenix 51-32 in the second half to tighten its grip on the Horizon League's second spot. Ramel Bethea led the Phoenix with 11 points, Marcus Hall added nine points, and Preston Ruedinger chipped in six points in the loss. Tuburu Naivalurua (26 points and 10 rebounds) and Isaac Garrett (17 points and 10 rebounds) posted double-doubles to pace the Golden Grizzlies.

The Gamblers had a 3-0 lead midway through the third period thanks to goals from Gavin Katz, David Rozsíval, and William Samuelsson, but Team USA rattled off a trio of goals in a four-minute span, including a pair from Dayne Beuker. After giving up the three goals, Leo Henriquez shut down Team USA, including stopping both shootout attempts. Katz and Carcone tallied the shootout goals to give the Gamblers the extra point in the standings.

The Gamblers will return to the Resch Center this weekend for a pair of games against Muskegon.

Gamblers fall in overtime at NTDP, slide to second in East

The Green Bay Gamblers dropped a tough overtime decision Saturday night, falling 6-5 to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program at USA Hockey Arena. Green Bay showed resilience throughout, with goals from Katz, Wooten, and Carcone, and briefly held a third-period lead before the NTDP tied the game late to force overtime. Meyer netted the game-winner 3:29 into the extra frame. The loss marks an up-and-down start to the second half of the season for the Gamblers and moves them into second place in the Eastern Conference, now trailing Youngstown. Green Bay will have a quick turnaround as they're back on the ice again tomorrow for a 3 p.m. puck drop.

UWGB takes first "Battle of I-43"

After watching the men defeat Milwaukee earlier this month, the women continued the trend taking the teams' first matchup this season 76-61 at Milwaukee. Green Bay started slow on the road Saturday trailing 17-10 after the first quarter, but responded in the second to carry a 27-24 lead into halftime. The Panthers brought the game within a point going into the final quarter when Green Bay decided to put them away for good, outscoring UWM 29-15 on their way to the 15-point win. UW-Green Bay struggled from the floor for the first two quarters, but broke it open in the fourth shooting 67% on 10-15 from the field. Meghan Schultz led the Phoenix, and all scorers, with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Jenna Guyer cleaned up the paint and the boards adding another double-double with 15 and 10 rebounds. Milwaukee's Madison Fitzgibbon finished with 19, but the Panthers had 18 turnovers that the Phoenix turned into 25 points ultimately helping them to another victory. Those extra threes came in handy to keep the game close in the first half as they entered the break trailing 40-37 only to see the game flip in the second half.

The Phoenix had four players reach double-figures with Preston Ruedinger narrowly missing a triple-double with 23 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds. Marcus Hall added 21 points, C.J. A second 8-0 run in the second quarter put the team on cruise control the rest of the way, using its staunch defense and gritty play in the paint and on the boards as a catalyst.

Jenna Guyer led the way with 17 points for the Phoenix with Meghan Schultz chipping in 12 points and Gracie Grzesk added another 10 points.

The Phoenix are 9-0 in the Horizon League for the first time since the 2016-2017 campaign. They will put that mark to the test on Saturday when they travel south to face Milwaukee for a weekend matinee.

All of the players finished the season on the Packers' practice squad or spent time on it during the 2025 season, with some earning playing time in regular season games as injuries piled up heading up into the playoffs.

Phoenix men survive scare from Norse

A team from Green Bay saw an 18 point lead disappear for the second straight day, but the Phoenix men wrote a different script on Sunday, holding on to beat Northern Kentucky 80-78.

As they did in their two previous games, a hot start shooting from the field gave the Phoenix enough of a cushion to stave off any comeback attempts. Caden Wilkins led the first-half assault with 17 points as the Phoenix jumped out to a 7-0 start and ended the period with a 51-35 halftime lead. The Phoenix would build a 56-37 advantage before the Norse got hot from beyond the arc, trimming the lead to just four points with under five minutes to play. The Phoenix and the Norse traded buckets throughout the final stretch with a last-second three rimming out acting as a sigh of relief for the home crowd.

Justin Allen led all scorers with 27 points to complement Wilkins' first-half heroics while Marcus Hall added 13 points and Preston Ruedinger chipped in nine points in the Phoenix victory.

The Phoenix play at Cleveland State on Thursday before returning home on Sunday to host Oakland on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Packers' dismantle in fourth quarter vs Bears again

A 21-3 lead at halftime was erased with a 25-point fourth quarter by Caleb Williams and the Bears offense for their second comeback win over Green Bay this season.

Jordan Love and the offense rolled in the first quarter scoring a touchdown on their first three drives and were in a position to go ahead 24-3, but Brandon McManus missed a 55-year field goal and the lead was held to 18.

Green Bay then stalled on their next four drives all resulting in punts coming out of halftime meanwhile the Bears managed to put up just a field goal.

The fourth quarter, Chicago's offense took advantage of a winded defense for GB and brought the game to one score 21-16.

When they needed it most, Love connected with Matthew Golden for his first, and only, touchdown on the season, a 23-yarder putting them ahead 27-16 after McManus missed his second kick of the night this time an extra point.

McManus would go on to miss another field goal, a 44-yarder, that would've give Green Bay a chance to do damage with a field goal in the final possession, but instead Williams took the short field and connected with D.J. Moore for what would be the game winner.

Chicago led 31-27 and Green Bay would need a touchdown.

On their last drive, Love was just a bit off schedule on throws and it came down to one play with 7 seconds remaining, the snap was fumbled, Love picked it up and scrambled throwing up a prayer to the end zone that fell short in front of Bears defenders.

The second half struggles this season continued and Green Bay's season ends despite a strong effort from Jordan Love and a banged up first-string. Love finished 24/46 for 323 yards and four touchdowns. Watson, Doubs, Reed, and Golden were on the receiving end.

Regrouping for 2026-27 will begin after Green Bay makes their way back home following the 31-27 loss. Chicago will move on to face either the 2-seeded Philadelphia Eagles or 5-seeded Los Angeles Rams at home next weekend.

Green Bay uses sweltering defense for eighth straight conference win

UW-Green Bay held Detroit Mercy to under 30 percent from both the field and three-point line and under 13 points per quarter until the fourth as GB won 74-53. The Phoenix also forced 15 turnovers by the Titans.

In contrast, Green Bay shot nearly 50 percent from the field and 30 from the big arc behind Jenna Guyer's double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Right behind her was Maddy Skorupski tagging on 18 points and dishing 8 assists. They had 21 assist in the game.

Detroit Mercy's Jasmine Edwards also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards to lead the way for the Titans offense.

The Pheonix were out-rebounded 42-39, but it didn't matter and they picked up their 8th win in 8 conference games so far this season.

Next up is hosting the second-place team in the Horizon, Purdue Fort Wayne, at the Kress Center January 14 in line for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

Green Bay stays undefeated in January, 5-1 over last six

Continuing their homestand at the Kress Center, UWGB's men (9-8, 4-2) added their third straight win and fifth in their last six games dating back to their December 11 win over IU Indy (4-14, 0-7). Friday night was their second win over Indy this season and came by a score of 75-59.

The win marks the first time in Doug Gottlieb's two seasons that they hold a winning record.

Green Bay outshot Indy in every category on their way to a convincing win and keeping their offensive efforts moving in the right direction.

Preston Ruedinger saw the ball go through at a 50% clip in the game, topping all scorers with 24 including 4-8 from three. As a team, GB out-rebounded Indy especially on the defensive glass, 38-22.

Packers at Bears for a Wildcard Weekend Showdown

One of the NFL’s most storied rivalries takes center stage this weekend as the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears meet in the Wildcard round of the playoffs on Saturday in Chicago. The matchup renews a rivalry that dates back more than a century and remains one of the most heated in professional sports.  Both teams are “backing into” the post-season. Chicago is expected to have its one of its top wide receivers, rookie Rome Odunze back in the lineup, along with two key defensive starters returning from injury, strengthening both sides of the ball as the team looks to play spoiler against its longtime rival.

Historically, the Packers hold the edge in the all-time series, leading the Bears 108-95-6. Green Bay has also enjoyed more championship success, with 13 NFL titles, including four Super Bowl victories, compared to Chicago’s nine championships and one Super Bowl ring.

Ahead of the game, fans will have a chance to show their support before the team even takes the field. Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is inviting the public to send off the Packers as they depart for Chicago on Friday. Fans are encouraged to arrive before 12:30 p.m. to gather inside the terminal, create signs, and cheer the team on in a respectful, family-friendly atmosphere.

As always when the Packers and Bears meet, pride, history, and bragging rights are on the line, and this time, the stakes are even higher.
