The Pittsburgh Steelers have named former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, bringing one of the NFL’s most accomplished modern coaches back to the sidelines, and rekindling a familiar connection for fans in Green Bay and Door County.
McCarthy, who maintained a residence in Egg Harbor during his tenure with the Packers, was often seen enjoying the area’s quiet charm during offseasons. His ties to the peninsula made him a familiar figure in Door County while he guided Green Bay through one of the franchise’s most successful eras.
From 2006 to 2018, McCarthy compiled a 125–77–2 regular season record with the Packers and led the team to nine playoff appearances. His crowning achievement came in 2010, when Green Bay captured Super Bowl XLV beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. Interestingly, the very team he now leads. Under McCarthy, quarterback Aaron Rodgers developed into a future Hall of Famer and multiple-time MVP, cementing the Packers as perennial contenders.
For Door County residents, the hire carries a hometown flavor. Many remember McCarthy as more than a Super Bowl coach; he was a quiet neighbor, boating and dining locally during Door County summers. Now, as he begins a new chapter in Pittsburgh, his legacy in Green Bay, and in Door County, remains firmly intact.
