Packers trade Rasul Douglas to Bills

The Green Bay Packers were sellers at the trading deadline on Tuesday by trading cornerback Rasul Douglas along with a fifth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for a third-round pick in 2024.   General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Tuesday before the 3:00 p.m. NFL deadline for trades.

Douglas played 36 games and started 28 in the regular season for the Packers after signing as a free agent during the 2021 season after playing for the Arizona Cardinals.

Blizzard sign brothers

The Green Bay Blizzard continues to add onto their roster ahead of their season opener this spring.

DB Dedrick Vanover and WR Tamarick Vanover Jr. were announced as the team's newest signings. The two players are brothers, though only Tamarick comes to the Blizzard with previous indoor football league experience.

According to GreenBayBlizzard.com, Tamarick played in one game for the Cedar Rapids River Kings in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the league's season. Tamarick later signed with the Tucson Sugar Skulls in 2022. Dedrick appeared in 20 games from 2018-2019 for the Morehouse Maroon Tigers. His career 53 tackles, 3 TFLs, 7 INTs, 21 PBUs, and one fumble recovery earned him 2nd Team All-SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) DB honors in 2019.

Packers approach trade deadline

Green Bay fans wonder if General Manager Brian Gutekunst will give them tricks or treats before the clock hits 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The NFL trade deadline is 3 p.m. on Tuesday, although past trade deadlines have not inspired much movement on the Packers' part the last few seasons. Many of the rumors have Packers selling rather than buying. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer says the Packers are looking at adding a running back to spark a slumping offense that has averaged less than 10 points in the first half over the last five games. Linebackers Preston Smith and De’Vondre Campbell and offensive lineman Yosh Nijman were all listed as potential players that could be considered on the move by Sports Illustrated as the organization continues to whittle down its 2024 cap number.

Green Bay survives scare from St. Norbert

For the second year in a row, St. Norbert almost grabbed an exhibition upset, only to be thwarted by Green Bay in the closing minutes by a 65-63 margin.

The Green Knights showed the importance of experience early in the contest, weathering the athleticism of the new-look Phoenix while building a lead that would grow to as high as ten points before settling on five points.

A Phoenix run in the middle of the half would give them a lead they would not give up, but they still needed a stroke of luck. Timely fouls and missed free throws gave the Green Knights a chance at a miracle, but a three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out, preserving the win for the Phoenix.

The close Phoenix victory prevented both teams from emptying the bench to get their players some action, including former Gibraltar product Will Friedenfels.

Monday's game was the only exhibition on the calendar for the Phoenix, as they will open the regular season at Iowa State next Monday. The Green Knights will open their regular season next Wednesday with a home game against Ripon.

Packers' Gary signs extension

The Green Bay Packers are rewarding linebacker Rashan Gary with a new contract.

Gary took to his social media accounts on Monday to announce his extension. The deal is reportedly worth $107 million over the next four years. Gary has been able to bounce back from the torn ACL he suffered last year in Detroit. In 2023, Gary has 15 tackles, including 4.5 sacks.

Vikings take skol away from Packers

Playing at home made no difference for the Green Bay Packers as another slow start doomed them in a 24-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

The Packers' offense barely reached the century mark in first-half yardage for the second week, failing to pick up a first down until four minutes left in the second half. They would pick up five first downs on their lone scoring drive, ending with a 30-yard field goal by Anders Carlson, only made possible because of a Vikings penalty. The Packers were lucky to only be down by seven at the break after Kirk Cousins engineered two scoring drives, including a touchdown run by Cam Akers.

The Vikings continued their dominance in the third quarter, with Cousins throwing two touchdown passes in two minutes, including one that came on the heels of a Jordan Love interception.  A one-yard touchdown grab by Romeo Doubs capped off the scoring for the game despite the Packers having the ball inside the Vikings' 25-yard line twice in the fourth quarter. The Packers failed to take advantage of the uneven play of Jaren Hall, who came in relief of Cousins, who saw his season end with a torn Achilles.

The Packers will try to salvage what is left of the season with another home game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Green Bay opens season against Friedenfels-featured St. Norbert

A familiar face for Door County basketball fans will be on the visiting bench Monday night when Green Bay hosts St. Norbert College in an exhibition matchup.

As has been the case for the last three seasons, the Phoenix featured an almost entirely new roster after the departure of former coach Will Ryan. The team will also feature an almost entirely new coaching staff, with Sundance Wicks landing the job after working at Wyoming, Northern State, Northern Illinois, Colorado, San Francisco, and Missouri Western. Over the weekend, the program announced a six-part docuseries on their upcoming season called "362," embracing their end-of-season ranking out of 363 teams. The Phoenix have failed to win ten games in the last two seasons.

The Green Knights are coming off a 20-8 season, which included Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a first-round NCAA Tournament win—the season ended with a close 75-71 loss to Wheaton College in the NCAA Division 3 Tournament's second round. The Green Knights' Gary Grzesk is familiar to Phoenix fans as a defensive stalwart on some of the Phoenix's most successful teams. Their roster includes a lot of local talent, none more local than Gibraltar's Will Friedenfels. The Baileys Harbor product was an All-Packerland performer for two of the more successful Vikings teams in the program's history, including an appearance in the 2022 state semifinal. He is one of eight freshmen on the team.

The Phoenix and Green Knights will meet at the Kress Center at 7 p.m.

Gamblers earn sweep in blowout

After two nail-biting victories on Friday and Saturday, Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks was suitable for the stress levels of the Green Bay Gamblers.

Lev Katzin opened the scoring in the first period with his fourth goal of the season. The Lumberjacks would return the favor early in the second period, only to see the Gamblers score the next four goals. Libor Nemec scored twice, while Geno Carcone and Landen Gunderson provided the other tallies in the victory. Gavin Moffatt stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced.

The Gamblers are back in action on Friday in Geneva, Ill., when they take on the Chicago Steel for a weekend set.

Packers try to get back on track at Lambeau vs. Vikings

Home cooking will have to be what it takes to get the Green Bay Packers off their three-game slide when they play the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

The Packers were sent into their current tailspin after being roughed up by the Detroit Lions in front of a raucous Honolulu blue crew at Lambeau Field almost a month ago. The Packers have since lost to other teams that have struggled to open the season (Las Vegas and Denver) on either side of a bye week. Finding the offense will be key as they are currently ranked in the league's bottom tier in passing and rushing yards.

The Vikings find themselves looking up at the Packers in the standings but got a healthy dose of confidence last week when they ran away with their victory against the San Francisco 49ers 22-17.

A bipartisan crowd is expected for the Packers/Vikings matchup when it kicks off at Lambeau Field at noon on Sunday. The Packers will play three of their next four games at Lambeau Field.

Gamblers squeak past Lumberjacks in shootout

The Green Bay Gamblers won their second straight game in Michigan on Saturday night, winning 6-5 in a shootout against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Jayson Shaugabay's first-period tally and second-period goals by Blake Bechen and Jason Gallucci gave the Gamblers a 3-2 lead entering the third period. After Geno Carcone gave the Gamblers their fourth goal, the Lumberjacks responded with three goals in three minutes to take a 5-4 lead. Bechen's second goal with under 10 minutes remaining forced overtime that would end scoreless. Julian Lutz was the only player on either side to register a goal in the shootout to give the Gamblers the extra point. Adam Gajan had 38 saves in the contest.

The two teams will duel again on Sunday at 2:10 p.m.

Gamblers survive Lumberjack comeback

An overtime goal helped the Green Bay Gamblers ward off the Muskegon Lumberjacks 3-2.

After a scoreless first period, Julian Lutz and Lev Katzin staked the Gamblers to a 2-0 with goals in the second period. The Lumberjacks would force overtime with two goals of their own in the third period. Halfway through the extra stanza, Chris Romaine's first goal of the season helped the Gamblers secure the weekend opening win.

The Gamblers and Lumberjacks are back at it Saturday night at 6:10 p.m.

Gamblers open three game set against Lumberjacks

The Green Bay Gamblers look to bounce back from a rough weekend with a road trip to Michigan to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Last weekend, the Gamblers dropped both games of its series against the Fargo Force, On Friday, the Force were 3-6 on the power play as they shut out the Green Bay Gamblers 4-0 at the Resch Center. The Gamblers registered 27 shots on goal for the night. Saturday night featured a third-period goal by the Gamblers but not much else in a 2-1 loss. The Force again converted 50 percent of their power play chances in the victory. The Gamblers are 2-4 this month.

The Lumberjacks 4-1 on the month, including a weekend sweep of Team USA in their last action. Matvei Gridin leads the USHL in 16 points (nine goals, seven assists).

The two teams will play at 6:10 p.m. Friday and Saturday before playing a 2:05 matinee on Sunday.

Gamblers place six on NHL watch list

Going to a Green Bay Gamblers means seeing some of the best young players in the sport, and the National Hockey League has noticed.

The NHL Central Scouting has placed six Gamblers players on their preliminary watch list just a couple of weeks into the United States Hockey League season. Those players are Eli Sebastian, Artyom Levshunov, Ben Poitras, Will Zellers, Christian Kirsch, and Aidan Park.

Five of the six are on the active roster, and those players all have committed to college for their post-Gamblers days.

The Gamblers will spend the full weekend in Muskegon, playing three games in three nights against the Lumberjacks beginning on Friday.

Lady Phoenix pick up exhibition victory

The Green Bay women's basketball kicked off their season Wednesday night with a dominant 74-36 exhibition victory against UW-Stout.

Every Phoenix player was able to enter the game to assist in the win, limiting the Blue Devils to just 23 percent shooting from the field and outrebounding them 40-23. Maddy Schreiber led the way with 13 points. Natalie McNeal and Callie Genke added 12 points apiece, and Cassie Schiltz chipped in 11 points.

The exhibition was a homecoming for Blue Devils coach Hannah (Quilling) Iverson, who was a part of one of the most successful stretches of Phoenix women's basketball in program history.

The Lady Phoenix will have another exhibition contest next Wednesday against Northern Michigan before opening the regular season at Northern Iowa on November 6th.

Schools prepare for winter sports season

With the majority of the area's fall sports teams out of their respective WIAA Tournaments, the focus for some of the athletes is being turned to the upcoming winter season.

November 6th marks the first-day girls' basketball teams can return to work along with the state's hockey and gymnastics teams. On November 13th, wrestling, boys' basketball, and boys' swimming can begin their practices.

Currently, Southern Door football, Kewaunee football, Luxemburg-Casco football, Sturgeon Bay soccer, Door County United swimming, and the area's four state cross country qualifiers are the only ones still alive in their respective WIAA State Series events.

Blizzard resign three new players

The Green Bay Blizzard continues to build their roster ahead of the season opener in the spring.

The Blizzard recently re-signed DL Rafiq Abdul-Wahid, WR Mike Green Jr.,  and DB Shawn Steele II for the 2024 campaign.

According to the Blizzard, Abdul-Wahid put up 12.5 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a blocked kick in eight games last season. Across 12 games, Steele registered 43.5 tackles, two tackles for loss, three interceptions and six pass breakups. Green had 17 receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

The Indoor Football League is teasing a big announcement to happen sometime on Tuesday:

Stock car racing disappearing from the peninsula?

You may have to travel to Manitowoc County and beyond to get your fill of stock car racing next summer. Officials for Door and Kewaunee counties have requested proposals from local promoters for the tracks at the Door County Fairgrounds and the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds.

In Door County, PKS3-LLC told officials in September that they would not seek a new contract to operate the track in 2024. A subsequent Highway and Facilities Committee meeting found no acceptable bids in the first round of the RFP process, but it hopes to be more fruitful the second time. District 9 County Board Supervisor Dan Austad said he would like to see racing continue, “but if no promoter wants to run the track, then racing may die in Door County.”

In Kewaunee County, Promotions and Recreation Department Director Dave Myers issued an RFP for racing at the Luxemburg Speedway, which has operated under The ‘Burg Speedway moniker for the last few seasons. According to the department's information, the track averaged over 100 cars and 630 fans in 2022 and 2023. That’s higher than in 2015 and 2019 but a far cry from 2016, when it averaged over 140 cars and 120 fans a night. The RFP for the Luxemburg Speedway is due back on December 5th.

Local athletes star on All-Conference lists

There was plenty of local flavor in the Packerland Conference's announcement of the All-Conference teams.

The conference players of the year all hailed from the area in all three sports. For football, Kewaunee's Braxton Riha swept the lineman of the year awards while his teammate Owen Carlson won the offensive player of the year award while Southern Door's Will Jandrin captured the honor on the defensive side of the ball. For soccer, Sturgeon Bay's Ben Stephens was named the Player of the Year while his classmate Nida Zukauskaite won it for volleyball.

First half sleepwalk turns into nightmare for Packers

Despite having an extra week to prepare and one of their big offensive stars back in the fold, the Green Bay Packers saw their record drop to 2-4 after losing to the Denver Broncos 19-17 Sunday evening.

The Packers only had 100 yards in the first half with three punts and a missed field goal to their credit. The only saving grace was the Packers' defense, which limited the Broncos to three field goals to send the two teams into the locker room, with Denver only holding a nine-point lead.

The Packers finally scored one on their first drive of the second half when Anders Carlson made good on his earlier sin and drilled a 29-yard field goal. The offense would pick up its pace in the third quarter with the Broncos' Russell Wilson and the Packers' Jordan Love throwing touchdown passes to make it a 16-10 game at the end of three quarters.

The Packers would take a slim 17-16 lead when a pass deflected off the hands of Romeo Doubs somehow found its way to Jayden Reed in the endzone. The defense would bend until the Broncos made a 52-yard field goal to give them a 19-17 advantage, but the Packers had over three minutes to work with. It would not mean much as Love would throw into double coverage for a long interception for the second week in a row.

The Packers will have to hope its home energy will not give way to skol chants as they return to Lambeau Field next Sunday to face the Minnesota Vikings for a noon start.

Gamblers swept by Force

The Green Bay Gamblers could not add a blemish to the Fargo Force's perfect record, losing both ends of their weekend set against the Western Conference leaders.

On Friday, the Force were 3-6 on the power play as they shut out the Green Bay Gamblers 4-0 at the Resch Center. The Gamblers registered 27 shots on goal for the night.

Saturday night featured a third-period goal by the Gamblers but not much else in a 2-1 loss. The Force again converted 50 percent of their power play chances in the victory.

The Gamblers will spend the full weekend in Muskegon, playing three games in three nights against the Lumberjacks beginning on Friday.

Course record set on Fall 50 course

A record fell during Saturday's Fall 50 on a cool day through the peninsula.

The five-member Grayslake Distance Project covered the 50-mile course in 4:35:35, a new course record for the relay, as the runners averaged 5:31 minutes per mile. For comparison, the average time for five-person teams was 7:53:28.

BBMC won the pairs relay with a time of 6:06:13, while Zach Ziesemer won the solo event with a time of 6:04:11. Over 4,000 runners participated in the event, with thousands more enjoying the fall foliage while dodging raindrops along the way.

You can find the full results here.

Gamblers open weekend set against Force

The Green Bay Gamblers return home for a weekend set against cross-conference opponent Fargo Force.

The Gamblers rebounded from a rough start to the month with a pair of victories this weekend. On Friday, the Gamblers snapped their losing streak in Iowa thanks to a hat trick from Julian Lutz and 50 saves from Adam Gajan to top the Des Moines Buccanneers 5-1. On their way back through the state on Saturday, the Gamblers' Jayson Shaugabay scored a goal just before the final minute of overtime to beat the Cedar Rapids Roughriders 4-3.

The Force have been living up to their name early in the 2023-2024 campaign, earning a 6-0-0 record and outscoring their opponents 25-9.

The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. both nights.

Rockers named organization of the year

The team that brought a title back to Titletown just keeps winning.

The Green Bay Rockers was announced as the Northwoods League Organization of the Year on Wednesday as a part of the league's fall meetings last week.

The award was not just given because the Rockers won the Northwoods League last season. The team was recognized for investing in its ballpark, continuing its live music before games, and its community outreach efforts.

“We are honored to be recognized as the Northwoods League Organization of the Year after a record-setting season,” said Rockers Vice President and GM John Fanta. “I can’t thank our ownership, front office, seasonal staff, host families, coaches, players, business and community partners and our fans for their dedication to the Rockers to make this an unforgettable year on and off the field. Our goal has been to make Capital Credit Union Park a place to bring the community together year-round and this award reaffirms that the Rockers brand of affordable fun is resonating in the Greater Green Bay area.”

The Rockers will return to Capital Credit Union Park next summer.

Packers sign two new practice squad members

On Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers added two new faces to their practice squad.

The Packers signed CB Anthony Johnson and RB James Robinson to the practice squad. The team also released CB Kiondre Thomas from the practice squad in a corresponding move. Robinson does bring some NFL regular season experience, according to Packers.com. He has played in 39 games with 32 starts for the Jaguars (2020-22) and New York Jets (2022) and also spent time with the New England Patriots and New York Giants this past offseason. For his career, Robinson has 514 carries for 2,262 yards (4.4 avg.) and 18 touchdowns, plus 91 receptions for 617 yards (6.8 avg.) and five TDs.

The  Packers are preparing for their game on Sunday on the road against the Denver  Broncos.

Final countdown to Fall 50 begins

Hundreds of runners will run the length of the peninsula this Saturday for the annual Fall 50 Race.

While many runners will tackle the 50-mile course as a part of a relay, dozens will run the course in its entirety. All solo runners will begin at 6:30 a.m. to afford them the maximum amount of daylight possible to complete the event, while the relay teams will start at 7:30 a.m., 8:20 a.m., 9:10 a.m., and 10:00 a.m., depending on how fast they are.

The course will be open to vehicular traffic, so runners and motorists must pay attention to each other to ensure safety. You can see a map of the course by clicking this link.

You can also contact the race for the number of volunteer opportunities that are still needed to be filled before Saturday's race.

Blizzard re-sign offensive lineman

The Green Bay Blizzard will welcome back one of its stalwarts on the offensive side of the ball next season.

The Blizzard announced late last week that it was re-signing offensive lineman Trent Clark for the 2024 season.

According to the Green Bay Blizzard, Clark is entering his second year in the Indoor Football League after joining the team in free agency in September 2022. He started at center in all 15 games for Green Bay last season. He was an integral part of an offensive line that blocked for an offense that finished fifth in the IFL and third in the Eastern Conference in offensive yards per game. The Blizzard offensive line gave up only eight sacks in 2023, which tied for second-least in the league.

Packers get back to work after bye

The Green Bay Packers hope the bye week came at the right time for them as they get back to work.

The Packers return to the fray after losing their last two games to the Detroit Lions and the Las Vegas Raiders. The loss to the Raiders was especially concerning to Packers fans as Jordan Love had his worst game as a pro, while the run game proved to be anemic at best. A bright spot has been the defense, which, according to SportsNaut.com, has allowed the seventh-lowest conversion rate on third downs (34.7%) and the 12th-lowest average QB rating (84.9).

The Packers will head to Denver for a Sunday matinee against the 1-5 Broncos.

Assembly passes bills banning gender-affirming care, transgender athlete participation

Whatever is on your birth certificate is what you will have to go by until you are at least 18 years of age after a trio of bills were passed by the Wisconsin State Assembly on Thursday.

Two of three bills dealt with allowing transgender athletes to participate in high school and college sports only by the gender they are assigned at birth. Currently, the WIAA requires athletes transitioning from male sports to female sports must undergo at least one year of hormone therapy before competing. The WIAA policy is similar to the one also used by the NCAA, which governs collegiate athletics. Green Bay news outlets reported on one such case within the Green Bay Area School Districts where parents objected to a transgender student participating in girls' athletics.

A third bill would prevent minors from not just getting gender reassignment surgery but also gender-affirming care such as hormones and puberty blockers. According to the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, many gender-affirming care options are not available until kids hit puberty and healthcare facilities like Children’s Wisconsin and UW Health do not perform gender reassignment surgery on minors. PFLAG founder Sandy Brown says the votes are nothing but political theater, citing the likelihood that Governor Tony Evers will veto the measures. She says children need all the help and support they can get during a potentially confusing time in their lives.

Rep. Joel Kitchens voted with his party on all three bills that fell largely along partisan lines. Kitchens says he has a long history of being supportive of the LGBTQ community, but says his votes are about fairness in athletics and a long-term view for kids that he would like to have more conversations on in the future.

According to Reuters, lawmakers in 37 states have introduced more than 140 bills restricting gender-affirming healthcare for trans and gender-expansive people this year.

Gamblers sweep weekend slate

The Green Bay Gamblers rebounded from a rough start to the month with a pair of victories this weekend.

Packers throw away game to Raiders

The Green Bay Packers will enter their bye week on a two-game losing streak after losing to the Las Vegas Raiders 17-13 on the road Monday night.

The Packers opened the scoring with a field goal from Anders Carlson only to have the Raiders score the next 10 points to make it a 10-3 lead at halftime. The Packers would grab the lead in the third quarter thanks to an A.J. Dillon touchdown run and another field goal. The Raiders took the lead early in the fourth quarter when Josh Jacobs scored a touchdown on a two-yard run.

Jordan Love had his worst day as a pro, throwing a trio of interceptions, including one in the endzone during the Packers' final drive that ended the comeback attempt. Dillon rushed for 76 yards and the only touchdown on the day for the Packers. Rudy Gay provided one of the other highlights for the Packers, intercepting a pass that set up the Packers' lone touchdown.

The Packers will next play at Denver on October 22nd.

Packers hit Sin City for Monday night matchup

The Green Bay Packers will head to Las Vegas for a Monday night tilt against the Raiders.

Thousands in Honolulu blue looked comfortable at Lambeau Field two Thursday nights ago as the Detroit Lions built a 24-point halftime lead en route to a 34-20 win over the Packers. Their makeshift offensive line struggled against the Lions' front four, something that could remain an issue even with Elgton Jenkins returning to practice late last week.

The Raiders have struggled their way to a 1-3 record. Jimmy Garoppolo is coming back from a concussion after giving way to Aidan O'Connell who led the Raiders to a 24-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Raiders have not won since their week one victory to the Denver Broncos.

One matchup that is stealing headlines is former Packers wide receiver Davante Adams and cornerback Jaire Alexander. Both players are nursing injuries that kept them off the practice field until Friday when they were both listed as limited participants.

Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m.

Gamblers swept in opening weekend

The Green Bay Gamblers had a rough return to a normal USHL schedule last weekend, losing to the Dubuque Fighting Saints on the road Friday night 9-0 and at the Resch Center 4-3 on Saturday.

In their 9-0 loss, the Fighting Saints took advantage of eight power plays, converting four of them while outshooting the Gamblers 37-20 on the night. The game featured over 100 penalty minutes with the Gamblers accumulating 66 of them.

In their 4-3 loss, the Gamblers were down 2-0 heading into the third period when Ben Poitras broke the weekend-long scoring drought. They would trade goals with their visitors for the rest of the period, with Luke Baker and Jake Duer scoring their first goals of the season.

Free agency opens in IFL

The opportunity to play professional football is now available in the Indoor Football League.

The IFL officially opened its free agency period on Monday after the last few weeks have been littered with other moves as teams try to resign players for the upcoming season that will begin in mid-March 2024.

The Blizzard will have one more team to compete against for free agents as the IFL added the Jacksonville Sharks in August.

Phoenix begin second full week of practice

The Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams will hit the court for their second full week of practices.

Both men's and women's basketball held their first official practices last week, although both teams have been in the gym and the weight room getting their work in over the last few weeks.

While the women's team added a familiar face to its coaching staff, there has been enough change for the men's program already. Only three players and a couple of staff members are back with the program after going 3-29 last season and was ranked 361 out of 363 Division 1 basketball programs. Head coach Sundance Wicks has not just been focusing on X's and O's but the culture that has taken a hit since the pandemic began. Since the 2020-2021 season, the Phoenix are 16-71. The program has been trying to capture that shift in culture on its social media channels.

The Phoenix women play their first exhibition against UW Stout on October 25th while the men battle St. Norbert's on October 30th.
