Sevastopol girls fall in Shawano Hoops Holiday Classic

Playing at the Kress Event Center on the campus of UW-Green Bay, Sevastopol girls fell to Lena 44-17 Tuesday.

The Pioneers were behind 17-8 at halftime and kept the game within striking distance, but Lena found their rhythm in the second half putting up 27 on their way to outscoring Sevastopol 27-9 in a lopsided second half.

Keeping Lena off their shots was productive in the first half, but the Pioneers struggled to score ultimately leading to the loss.

The Sevastopol Pioneers returned to Institute Thursday night with a 59-53 win over their rivals Gibraltar for their fifth victory of the season.

Damien Lardinois put the Pioneers on his back during the first-half, scoring 16 of his game-high 21 points in the opening frame, which included a pair of three-pointers. His efforts helped the Pioneers enter the locker room with a 31-18 lead at the break.

The Vikings made a game of it in the second half, outscoring their guests 38-28 thanks to Marco Jauregui's nine points and Wyatt Bultman's eight points that came after the break. Lardinois hit a big three and Zaul Valdivia and Bo Tanck made key free throws down the stretch to help the Pioneers avert the upset.

In addition to Lardinois' 21 points, Valdivia scored 15 points and Tanck added 10 points for the Pioneers. Jauregui led the way for the Vikings with 15 points while Bultman chipped in 11 points, and Finn Bremer added seven points.

Pioneers Hold off Clippers in Stronger Together Game

In a packed gymnasium in Institute on Tuesday night the Pioneers defended their homecourt 51-49, holding off a late Clipper surge on U102.1.

Before the Varsity game even started though, the community rallied around the two humans who gave meaning the nights theme of 'Stronger Together'  Lucia Ramirez and Blake Butch were in attendance with their families as the Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol came out to support the fights Lucia and Blake have in front of them battling Leukemia and Brain Tumors respectively.

Not only were the families presented with donations prior to the game, but Lucia and Blake were the only two starters announced for the Pioneers.

The game that followed did everything it could to live up to the hype of the evening.  Sevastopol would win the opening tip, but the teams would swap a few empty possessions to open the game.  The Pioneers would draw blood first, and would never lose the lead.  Andrew Weisner had a pair of three pointers in the first half that helped the Pioneers maintain leads, but the Clippers' Sam Fruzna kept things close with 8 first half points, including going 4-4 from the free throw line. The entire first half, the lead would grow no larger than 6 points.

The second half was a bit more chaotic than the first.  The Pioneer lead at one point ballooned to 11 points, but Ben Ash and his 14 second half points helped claw the Clippers back.  The Pioneers had to battle through foul trouble for both Logan Schuh and Bo Tanck allowing the Clippers to get several second chance opportunities and cutting into the Pioneer leads.

With less than 5 seconds to go, Sturgeon Bay's Fruzyna found himself at the line for a 1 and 1 bonus opportunity with the Clippers trailing by 3.   He would hit the first free throw.  Head Coach Zach Goblish called a timeout to draw up the desperation play.  He instructed Frusyna to intentionally miss, hoping to get a Clipper rebound and a last second putback attempt, but the ball would slip into Pioneer hands draining the finals moments of the match.

Sevastopol's leading scorers were Andy Weisner with 18, Logan Schuh with 10, and Andrew Weisner with 9.  They next head to Algoma to take on the Wolve's Friday December 12th.

The Clippers leading scorers were Ben Ash with 21, Sam Frusyna with 9, and Siggy Hansen with 8.  Sturgeon Bay heads home to take on the Southern Door Eagles on Friday December 12, which you can hear as Jacob Nate takes you through the action at 6:45 for the pregame, and the 7:00 PM tipoff.

Pioneers girls welcome Raiders

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls basketball team returns to action on Monday when they welcome Two Rivers to Institute.

She had strong support from Braelyn Staats who had 7 points paired with 8 rebounds.

The Raiders have lost three straight contests after winning their first two games. That includes a 64-42 loss to Brillion where they were unable to dig out of a 36-21 halftime deficit. Sophomore Allie Gallagher leads the Raiders in scoring with 12.0 ppg.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Pioneers lose road game to Trojans

Sevastopol's unbeaten streak to start the season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 54-45 loss to Green Bay Southwest.

Head coach Tom Ash said they did not do the little things right in the first half that allowed their hosts to stick around. One of those things came at the free throw line where they missed 13 shots, leading to the Trojans' 22-17 advantage at the break.

While both teams shot better in the second half, the Trojans could never shake the Pioneers and the Pioneers could not climb out of their hole, having to foul late to give themselves a chance.

Andrew Wiesner led the Pioneers with 13 points while Zaul Valdivia added 11 and Bo Tanck chipped in eight points. The Trojans were led by Zachary Diemer's 19 points and 18 from Noah Schroeder.

The Pioneers return home on Tuesday for their Stronger Together game matchup against Sturgeon Bay at 7 p.m. Jacob Nate will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Pioneers Continue Run, Beat Southern Door

The Sevastopol Pioneers continued their early-season success with a 77–50 win over the Southern Door Eagles on Thursday night. The Pioneers improve to 3–0, while the Eagles drop to 0–2.

Early on, it was clear the Eagles are still finding their footing after losing a large senior presence, while the Pioneers are building on the momentum of their young roster. Sevastopol jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

That lead grew throughout the game, thanks in part to a large discrepancy on the boards, with the Pioneers nearly doubling the Eagles in second-chance opportunities. On top of that, Sevastopol forced nearly three dozen Eagle turnovers.

The Pioneers were led by longtime starter Zaul Valdivia, who finished with 20 points despite missing part of the second half with a minor injury. Close behind him was Damien Lardinois with 17. The Eagles continued last year’s trend of getting contributions from beyond their starting lineup, as Talon Mueller, Eli Jaden, and Ryker Lohrey each finished with 9.

Sevastopol has a quick turnaround, facing Green Bay Southwest on Saturday afternoon, while Southern Door gets a week off before taking on Sturgeon Bay on the road Friday night. The Southern Door vs. Sturgeon Bay game can be heard on U102.1, with Jacob Nate on the call starting at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show and tipoff at 7.

Sevastopol pulls out narrow victory over Southern Door in girls basketball

Braelyn Staats led the charge offensively for the Pioneers with 15 and 7 rebounds. Her supporting cast help facilitate the win Lyvia Duessler added 8 points and a crucial 4 assists and 5 steals while Sydney Peterson tabbed 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

When asked about the night Coach Max Hawkins said, "I am extremely proud of the way our team bounced back from game 1. It could’ve been easy to roll over and give up, but that isn’t what this team is built on, and we saw that hard work pays off with a win."

Sevastopol will next compete against Sturgeon Bay on Friday December 5 at Sturgeon Bay High School.

Pioneers boys pound Patriots

In addition to Lardinois' 17 points, Castillo scored 13 points, Bo Tanch added 12 points, and Andrew Wiesner joined Valdivia with 10 points. Wallen Severson scored 14 points to lead the Patriots in the loss.
