Sevastopol earns first win

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls’ basketball team found their first victory of the season over the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on New Years Eve, 41-24.

The Pioneers (1-2) saw their first victory over Sturgeon Bay (0-4) in five years. Sevastopol’s Bailey Rikkola led her team on an offensive mission in the first half of play by dropping 12 points. Sturgeon Bay’s offense was stunned early when Sevastopol head coach Ben Rikkola applied a defensive press to limit the Clippers to a 6-point first half. Second half play saw the Pioneers generate 21 points to solidify a 17-point road victory over the Clippers. Ashley Alberts featured as Sturgeon Bay’s leading scorer while Emma Reinhardt added a pair of baskets as well. Sevastopol’s Rikkola finished with 16 points and Zoe Kuehn reached double-digit figures as well with 10 points.

Sevastopol head girls basketball coach Ben Rikkola said after the game he was happy to get a win under his belt:

Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay will continue their classic Packerland Conference rivalry with another game on January 7th.

Pioneers, Clippers both search for first win

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls’ basketball team will visit the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on New Years Eve for a Packerland Conference showdown.

The two programs will be seeking their first win of the season as they have seen slow starts in both non-conference and conference play. The Clippers have found themselves struggling in their two games, most recently coming off a 60-44 loss to Gibraltar. The Pioneers are in a winless boat as well after losing a non-conference matchup to Menahsa and having their season placed on COVID-19 hold for a month until playing Kewaunee on Tuesday night. The last time these two squads faced off was February of 2020, that game favored the Clippers by one point, 35-34. The conference implication matchup will tip-off at 10am.

Sevastopol, Kewaunee dual for conference implications

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls’ basketball team will host the Kewaunee Storm for a Tuesday night Packerland Conference tip-off.

Sevastopol is coming off a three week athletic department pause after dealing with COVID-19 protocols. The Pioneers have not seen any conference game action so they will truly be tested with an undefeated conference team in Kewaunee. Sevastopol has one game under their belt that dates back to the end of November when they fell short to the Roncalli Jets, 59-48. Kewaunee has three games played in the last month but has not seen a victory since December 18th. The two programs last met in February of 2020 in which the Storm blew the Pioneers out, 76-42. The first whistle sounds at 7:30pm.

Sevastopol looks to bounce back

The Sevastopol Pioneers travel to the Peshtigo Bulldogs for a conference matchup. The Pioneers fell to the Bulldogs twice last season but have had some early success this season with a 2-1 record. Peshtigo is coming off a season opening conference win over Marinette and looks to repeat history from last year against the Pioneers. Both squads will be participating in their second conference game of the year while Sevastopol is looking to gain their first conference win. Tip-off is at 7:30pm.

Sevastopol drops to Oconto

The Sevastopol Pioneers boys’ basketball team dropped a conference game to the Oconto Blue Devils on Thursday night, 75-30.

Sevastopol head coach Ron Frank’s team entered the game 1-0 after a non-conference win on Tuesday. The Pioneers couldn't keep up with the Blue Devils offensive play in the first half. Oconto increased their lead significantly to end the first half, 44-11. The Blue Devils started the second half with a 12-0 scoring run and showed no mercy towards the Pioneers throughout the rest of the game. Hunter Bemmann led Sevastopol with 11 points in the loss.

Sevastopol falls to 0-1 in conference play and takes on Peshtigo next Tuesday, December 8th.

Pioneers boys' basketball opens conference play

The Sevastopol Pioneers will get their first Packerland Conference test of the season when it hosts the Oconto Blue Devils Thursday night.

The Pioneers opened their season with a 60-32 win over NEWCHAA earlier this week. Cole Dvorak led the way with 14 points and Hunter Bemmann chipped in another 11 points in the victory. The Blue Devils are also coming off their first victory of the season, downing Wabeno/Laona 63-52 in a road matchup. Caleb Moe led the way for the Blue Devils in the victory, collecting 24 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Sevastopol boys' basketball makes season debut

The Sevastopol boys' basketball team gets their season underway Tuesday night when they face the Northeast Wisconsin Christian Homeschoolers Athletic Associaton.

The Pioneers are coming off an 8-15 season last year and are looking to improve on that under new head basketball coach Ron Frank. They will have to do so without their top scorers from last season in Robby Pollman, Brent Haberli, and Josh Pflieger. The trio of seniors averaged 38 of the team's 62.5 points last season.

The game begins at 7:30 p.m. in Institute.
