Pioneers football battle Tigers in Peninsula Conference opener

The Sevastopol Pioneers will try to get their first victory of the season when they welcome the Gillett Tigers for eight-player football action on Thursday.

 

In their 28-14 loss to Valley Christian last week, The Pioneers found themselves down 22-0 heading into the second half before breaking through with a score in the third quarter thanks to an eight-yard touchdown pass from Logan Schuh to Oliver Matthew. Landon Frank scored the other Pioneers touchdown in the fourth quarter on a long 56-yard rush. Frank and Schuh combined to rush for 167 yards on 23 carries. 

 

The Tigers had their way with county rival Suring last week, scoring two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters en route to a 46-12 victory. Jesse DeBauch had five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) as he nearly threw for 300 yards while rushing another 40 yards. Jackson Pecha rushed for the other score while Nathan Rowell nearly hit 100 yards on the ground on just seven carries.

 

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sevastopol Volleyball wins Triangular at home

Sevastopol volleyball won a home triangular match against Kohler and Manitowoc Roncalli on Tuesday evening.  In the first match, the Pioneers upended Kohler two games to one, winning 25-13, then losing game two 21-25 and winning the match with a 25-23 decision in game three. 

Sevastopol will hit the road and take on the Reedsville Panthers next Tuesday with the match starting at 7:00 p.m. from Reedsville Elementary School.

Sevastopol volleyball hosts triangular meet Tuesday

The Sevastopol Pioneers volleyball team hit their own court on Tuesday for a triangular meet.

 

The Pioneers have split their first six matches of the season, most recently dropping their last three matches to Lake Mills and twice to Wisconsin Dells in straight 2-0 sets at the Adams-Friendship Invite in Wisconsin Dells. 

 

Kohler and Roncalli are on the docket for when action begins at 5:30 p.m. The Jets of Roncalli lost their match of the season 2-1 to Mishicot at the Reedsville Invite while the Blue Bombers of Kohler have not won a single set across five matches this season. That includes a 2-0 loss to Kewaunee, Cambria-Friesland, and Hilbert at the Hilbert Invite over the weekend.

 

Pioneers girls take 3rd at Freedom meet

The Sevastopol girls cross country team got off to a fast start in their first race of the year in Freedom, coming in third place overall in the small school division.

 

Senior Bea Dramm led the way with a ninth-place finish and a time of 21:37. Junior Naomi Rikkola and Freshman Shylee Asher also broke 23 minutes on the 5K course. The girls scored 77 points, 42 points off of champion Freedom, which placed four runners in the top 10. Head coach Annie Kapolnek was proud of the performance, pointing out that their top five runners all finished within two minutes of each other.

Sevastopol volleyball heads to Dells

Sevastopol looks to continue its successful start of the season with a tournament in Wisconsin Dells at the Just a Game Fieldhouse beginning at 9 a.m. Rhinelander, Oshkosh North, Antigo, Cedarburg, Wisconsin Dells, Bruce, Clintonville, Dodgeland, Fall River, Peshtigo, Riverdale, Royall, Shawano Community, Sheboygan North, Rio Community, and Lake Mills will also compete. 

 

The Pioneers opened their season with a 3-0 match mark earlier this week.  The Pioneers beat Manawa in the first contest 2-1, before defeating Gillett and White Lake three sets to one in the following matches.  No individual stats were reported.   

Sevastopol opens cross country season in Freedom

The Pioneers will open their cross country season on Friday morning with a road meet.

 

Sevastopol will join Kaukauna, Little Chute, Seymour, Assumption, Brillion, Chilton, De Pere, Fox Valley Lutheran, Gillett, Green Bay East, Green Bay Preble, Northland Pines, Oconto Falls, Peshtigo, Winneconne, New London, St. Mary's Springs Academy, Weyauwega Fremont, Marinette, and Coleman for a cross country meet hosted by Freedom at Irish Waters Golf Course. The first race begins at 8:30 a.m.

Sevastopol doubled up by Valley Christian in football opener

The return to the gridiron proved to be fruitful for Valley Christian as they left Institute with a 28-14 victory over Sevastopol Thursday night.

Sevastopol football opens season vs. Valley Christian

The long wait for Eight-Player football teams across the state ends on Thursday with several games on the slate, including Sevastopol's home contest against Valley Christian.

 

The Pioneers are coming off a 3-5 season that ended with them losing consecutive games to local foes Algoma and Gibraltar. Returning to the Pioneers is All-Conference selections Alex Andreae (1st team DL, Honorable Mention RB) and Michael Wautlet (2nd team LB).

 

Thursday marks a return to football for Valley Christian. WGBA-TV reported earlier this year that the Oshkosh-based school has gone seven years without its own team, opting to join forces with St. Mary's Catholic the last seven years. It came with success as they went 8-0.

 

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

 

Pioneer volleyball sweeps Gillett Quadrangular

The Sevastopol Pioneers volleyball team had a successful opening to the 2023 season by winning a quad against Manawa, Gillet, and White Lake at the host school Gillet on Tuesday.  The Pioneers beat Manawa in the first contest 2-1, before defeating Gillet and White Lake three sets to one in the following matches.  No individual stats were reported.   

Pioneers volleyball travel to Gillett for quad meet

The regional champion Sevastopol Pioneers volleyball team will begin their 2023 title defense with a quadrangular meet in Gillett on Tuesday.

 

The Pioneers graduated four All-Conference performers from last year's squad, but will still have All-Packerland Honorable Mention outside hitter Alaina Schopf returning for her senior season.

 

The Pioneers will face a combination of the host school, Elcho, Stockbridge, and White Lake when the action begins at 4 p.m. 

Pioneers host Eight-Player football scrimmages

The first Eight-Player football action of the season can be found in Institute on Friday, although they will not be playing for keeps quite yet.

 

Algoma, Gibraltar, and Sevastopol will all scrimmage against each other beginning at 10 a,m. as they work out the kinks before opening their seasons next weekend. That week, Sevastopol will welcome Valley Christian on Thursday, Algoma will battle Green Lake/Princeton at home on Friday, and Montello comes to Gibraltar on Saturday.

Door County United open season with practice Tuesday

The Door County United swim team hit the pool for the first time on Tuesday.

 

The team will once again feature swimmers from Door County's four high schools as they look to duplicate last season's success. The season features five home meets, which will take place at the Door County YMCA in Sturgeon Bay. The team will have its first meet on August 19th at Marinette against Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Shawano Community, Seymour, New London, and Clintonville with the first events beginning at 9 a.m.
