Denamur gets two wins for Clippineers

Ben Denamur earned the only two wins for Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol at a tough Lourdes Academy On The Water Classic over the weekend.

Denamur went 2-2 on the weekend, winning his initial match of the championship and consolation rounds before falling short his next time out. Both wins at a flair for the dramatic with an overtime victory to start his day and getting a second-period pin of Ben Habighorst (Waupaca) to advance to the next round.

Sevastopol boys to play in Lena consolation game

The Sevastopol High School boys basketball team is competing in a tournament in Lena this weekend. The first round was Friday with the Pioneers being edged by Stockbridge 66-61. That drops Sevastopol to 0-4 on the season. They will play again Saturday in the consolation game against the host school.

The Panthers are also winless on the season at 0-6 meaning the matchup represents Sevastopol’s best chance, to date, to break into the win column. Lena lost to the fourth team in the tournament, Valley Christian, by a healthy 70-48 margin. Tipoff is at 4 PM.

Sevastopol record board needs your help

Depending on your memory, you can help update the Sevastopol girls' track record board.

The Sevastopol School District will be posting a new hallway display case in the near future, but it is asking for help when it comes to the years the records were broken. You can contact the school if you have any information on these record holders. One is easy though, Zoe Kuehn broke the mark for the triple-jump this spring, You can read more about that experience when it happened here.

Sevastopol boys dropped by Peshtigo

In just the second game of the season for the Sevastopol High School boys basketball team, the offense still failed to click Tuesday night against Peshtigo. Sevastopol fell to 0-2, losing 61-50 to the Bulldogs. Last year’s squad saw a similarly slow start with the offense coming to life after Christmas. Before the holiday in 2018, Sevastopol scored under 40 points in three of their first six games. That happened once in their last 14.

If this year’s team stays true to form, they should be rounding into shape come the Lena Invitational. Before then, the Pioneers play NEW Christian Home School Thursday and are at Southern Door next week.

Sevastopol girls still looking for first win

The Sevastopol High School girls basketball team fell Friday at Peshtigo, 54-34. They are still looking for the first win of the 2019-20 season. The Pioneers have a great chance to change that coming up Thursday when they host NE Wisconsin Christian Home School. The NEWHC Athletic Association fields teams in track and field, volleyball, cross country, and basketball from fifth grade and up. They do not play a regular schedule though. The game, set for Thursday, will be Christian Home School’s first contest of the season.

Pollman provides offense in Pioneers loss

Sevastopol's Robby Pollman was the only Pioneer who could solve the Oconto Blue Devils' defense in its 77-57 loss Thursday night.

Pollman scored 23 of the Pioneers' 57 points while only three other players scored more than seven points on the evening. Neither team could truly take advantage of charity stripe with the Pioneers going 9 for 20 from the line and the Blue Devils knocking in 19 of its 32 attempts.

The Pioneers return home on Tuesday to face Peshtigo.

More offense, same result for Sevastopol girls

After putting up just 18 points in their opening game, the Sevastopol High School girls basketball team notched a respectable 36 at home against Oconto Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the result was the same in both games as the Blue Devils edged the Pioneers, 43-36. Oconto shot a scorching 19-32 from the field led by Hannah Moe with 13 points as Jenna Hornblad tallied 19.

Oconto improves to 1-0 in Packerland Conference play with Sevastopol sitting at 0-1. The Pioneers next game is on the road at Peshtigo on Friday. The Pioneers wrap up the 2019 portion of their schedule with three games in five days beginning on December 12th.

Sevastopol girls lose opener

The Sevastopol High School girls basketball team finished last in the Packerland Conference in 2018-19, and the opening contest of this season suggests it could be another long season on Highway 57. The Pioneers lost to Two Rivers, 41-18, Saturday afternoon.

Thirty-six games were played across the state on Saturday and Sevastopol's 18 ties for the lowest point total of any team on the court in all those contests. Going 5-18 last year and winless in conference, Sevastopol never scored fewer than 24 points. The Pioneers averaged 43 per game last season. The offense will have to improve rapidly for Sevastopol. Their next game is home against Oconto on Tuesday night. The Blue Devils are winless, falling to Wabeno/Laona and Coleman.
