The Sevastopol Pioneers boys' basketball team look to snap their losing streak when they head Suring to play the Eagles.

The Pioneers have lost seven straight since their last win against Stockbridge on January 5th. Nick Peterson scored 14 points and Frankie deYoung added 13 points in a Saturday matinee loss to Florence 79-61. The Pioneers' defense had no answer for the Bobcats' William Kelley, who scored 25 points in the game. Three others scored at least 14 points for the Bobcats in the victory over the Pioneers.

The Eagles snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 66-46 victory against St. Thomas Aquinas last Tuesday. Ethan Lally leads the Eagles with just over 10 points a game.

The two teams will square off in Suring at 7:15 p.m.

It was a great day at the pool today. The boys showed up to do work today and I am immensely proud of them. We placed 10th out of a field of 19 today, and beat three of our conference rivals along the way. We also beat Sheboygan South, who we had previously swam against at their invite meet two weeks ago and lost to there.

For a second straight weekend, the Sevastopol girls' basketball team took care of business as a part of the back-to-back slate.

On Friday, the Pioneers took down Southern Door 55-23 with Naomi Rikkola scoring 15 points and Kayla Ranly adding 11 points. Libby Ash drilled three of the team's seven three-pointers in the win. The Eagles' Alianna Dufek was the only player to have success against the Pioneers, scoring 17 points. Payton Gilbertson was one of three others to score in the game for the Eagles, amassing three points.

The Pioneers' defense was even stingier in their Saturday afternoon matchup against Gibraltar, beating their northern rivals 57-12. Ash hit seven shots from behind the arc to lead the team with 21 points. Bailey Rikkola scored 12 points while Naomi Rikkola and Ranly each added 10 points. The Vikings managed just two made field goals in each half. Chloe Alexander led the way with six points while Andie Schar and Betsy Lecy added two points.

The Sevastopol Pioneers have not taken the court since Tuesday, and they will resume at home against Florence. 

On Tuesday, the Pioneers fell to Peshtigo 85-46 behind a completely balanced scoring performance from the Bulldogs. Lucas Delsart and Nick Peterson were the leaders for Sevastopol in that matchup as they scored 13 and 11 respectively. The Pioneers enter the matchup on Saturday with a 2-13 overall record, and will look to add another win into the column. 

The Bobcats of Florence currently sit at 14-1 overall and 8-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Florence is led by multiple top scorers, with four players at 11 points per game or more. Overall, William Kelley has the highest average so far with 14.6 points per game. A seven game winning streak will be on the line for the Bobcats against the Pioneers, after a loss to Reedsville on December 27th.

The Door County United swim team will head to Shorewood for their second competition of the week.

Competing  teams include Baraboo, Berlin, Berlin/Green Lake, Brown Deer, Cedarburg, Chilton, Edgewood, Fort Atkinson, Kiel
McFarland, Monona Grove, Nicolet, Plymouth, Sheboygan South, Two Rivers, Whitefish Bay and Shorewood.

First events begin at 8 a.m.

The Sevastopol Pioneers will welcome in the lone Packerland conference team that gave them some troubles the first half of conference play, as they see Southern Door come to town Friday night. 

The Pioneers swept through the Packerland Conference with ease the first half of the season, with their closest game coming in a 53-51 win over the Southern Door Eagles. Sevastopol barely survived overtime in that December 8th matchup, as Southern Door’s entry pass was off the mark with 3 seconds left and the Pioneers held on. Sevastopol will look to stay undefeated on the backs of their top scoring offense in the conference. 

Southern Door lost 40-39 to Peshtigo Monday night, and once again had a chance to win. Allianna Dufek’s shot was no good with just tenth of seconds left and could have pulled the Eagles into an upset win. The team will look to run with the Pioneers as well as they did earlier in the season, and hope for a different ending. Callie Miller and Isabella Price could be difference makers Friday, as they combined for four points in the previous matchup, with Price having all four. 

Tip-off from Sevastopol is set for 7:30 P.M. 

We’ll see both Two Rivers and Kiel again at the conference championship, which is going to be a dogfight. We keep ourselves mentally in the game, we should have a solid chance at marking our mark, even with a squad of nine.

The Peshtigo boys' basketball team scored 58 points in the first half, putting Sevastopol into a hole they could not dig out of in an 85-46 loss on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs had balanced scoring throughout their line-up with six players scoring between 10 and 13 points. Will McMahon, Kaine Fort and Grant Bauman teamed up to each score 13 points in the win. 

The Pioneers countered with its own trio of players scoring at least 10 points. Lucas Delsart paced the Pioneers with 13 points, while Nick Peterson and Chase Haberli contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Despite a nearly 2-1 disadvantage at the free throw line, the Pioneers shot well as they went 11-16 compared to 13-30 for the Bulldogs. 

Sevastopol will host one of the top teams in the Packerland Conference as the Peshtigo Bulldogs will pay the Pioneers a visit. 

Sevastopol was defeated by the Bulldogs’ neighbor Oconto, last time on the court. The guards were the big storyline and scorers in that matchup, even for the Pioneers as Nick Peterson scored 11 points and Zaul Valdivia finished with 10. The Pioneers were strong from outside the arc last Friday night, hitting nearly 50% of their 3’s. 

Peshtigo is fresh off of a strong non-conference performance as they defeated the Menominee Maroons 74-54. Grant Baumann and Mason Doberstein lived at the free throw line in the matchup, as Baumann went 10 for 11 and Doberstein finished 7 for 9. The Bulldogs sit at 6-1 in the Packerland, tied for second with the Kewaunee Storm.

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls' basketball team made the most of their three-hour-plus road trip over the last two days, picking up wins against Owen-Withee and Mellen on consecutive days.

In their 46-25 win over Owen-Withee on Friday, both teams struggled offensively in the first half before the Pioneers erupted for 30 points. Kayla Ranly and Naomi Rikkola led the way with 12 points while Bailey Rikkola chipped in 10 points. Kayla Rasmussen was the only member of Owen-Withee to reach double figures with 10 points, scoring all of them in the first half.

Saturday's game against Mellen, the Pioneers took a commanding 37-17 lead after the first half of play en route to a 64-35 victory. Four Pioneers players reached double figures, led by 19 points by Naomi Rikkola. Bailey Rikkola added 11 points while Libby Ash and Ranly chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively. Makenah Stricker and Britta Josephson each had 10 points in the loss for Mellen.

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls basketball team will make the long drive to Mellen to take on the Granite Diggers. 

Sevastopol will be in the second night of their back to back after facing off against Owen-Withee. The Pioneers have played a rather strong non-conference schedule this season, and will add to that in their matchup against Mellen. The Granite Diggers are 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Indianhead Conference. Sevastopol will need to use their scoring ability in order to pull out a win Saturday. 

Mellen is coming off of a 29 point win over conference foe Mercer. The Granite Diggers are on a six game winning streak dating back to December 6th. The team overall is a balanced shooting team, with 3 players within a point of each other at 10 points. Britta Josephson leads the way for Mellen with 11 points per game.

The Sevastopol Pioneers will host the Oconto Blue Devils on Friday night to end their first half of Packerland play. 

Sevastopol will look to avoid going winless through the first trip around the Packerland. The Pioneers are on a four game losing streak dating back since their nine point win over the Stockbridge Panthers. A good sign however for the Pioneers is that they have overall even balanced scoring, which could help them in close games. 

For the Blue Devils, the power duo of Carter Koch and Kadin Baxter have been given some extra help recently, which has sparked their win streak before the loss to Peshtigo. Cooper Campshure and Dominik Baxter have become strong scoring options, and made the Oconto offense stronger than at the beginning of the year. All four of those players average above 8 points per game, with both Baxters and Koch scoring more than 12.

Pending weather from the upcoming Winter Storm, the Sevastopol Pioneers will travel to another top team in the Packerland in back to back matchups as they take on Peshtigo Thursday night. 

Sevastopol has shown the ability for many different players to score in different ways, as in the win over Oconto the Pioneers had Kayla Ranly and Libby Ash as their leading scorers, giving Bailey Rikkola a night off from scoring. Three Pioneers currently sit at 11 points per game or more, as overall Sevastopol averages just below 60 points per game, which is the most in the Packerland. 

Peshtigo moved up to 2nd in the Packerland with Oconto’s loss to Sevastopol, and will look to knock the Pioneers off of their perfect conference record. The Bulldogs have won 4 straight Packerland games, after their 2-2 start in their first four games. Akira Smalls and Jaci Tonn have led the Bulldogs so far this season, with 13.4 and 9.1 points respectively.

Looking for their first Packerland win of the season, the Sevastopol Pioneers boys basketball team will travel to conference contender NEW Lutheran to take on the Blazers Tuesday night. 

Sevastopol will look to stop and end a three game losing streak dating back to their Stockbridge win on January 5th. Zaul Valdivia has been the scoring leader for the Pioneers in the past 2 games, with 16 and 17 points in each of those games. Nick Peterson has been a good scorer alongside Valdivia as well, averaging 8.2 points per game this season. 

 NEW Lutheran has been lead by one of the better players in the conference, as Tristan Lynch has performed up to standards so far this season. Lynch averages 22.5 points per game, which would lead the Packerland if not for Drew Daoust’s 31.5. The Blazers have another top six scorer in Elijah Meerstein as well, who averages 15.4 points per game. 

Tip Off from Green Bay is set for 7:30 P.M. 

Libby Ash is known for her sharpshooting abilities, and that has been noted as she currently leads the Division Five leaderboard for 3-Point Percentage and is on pace to take part in the Wissports WIAA Girls Basketball 3-Point Challenge. 

Ash currently sits at 51% on the season from behind the arc, connecting on 25 of her 49 threes hoisted this season. In the win over the second-place Oconto Blue Devils, she showcased her outstanding outside shooting by cashing in 5 of her 7 attempted threes for a season high 17 points. 

According to Wissports.net, the top two players at the end of the regular season in each division based on shooting percentage (min. 75 attempts) will be selected to participate. 

The 3-Point Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 11th at 9:30 am at the Kohl Center in Madison. Fans can attend the event with tickets from the morning/afternoon session. 

In the battle for the top spot in the Packerland Conference, it was the Sevastopol Pioneers routing the Oconto Blue Devils 69-42. 

Sevastopol keeps their perfect record in Packerland play alive with the win over the second place Oconto Blue Devils. It was the Kayla Ranly show against the Blue Devils for Sevastopol, as she poured in a team high 19 points. Libby Ash joined her in a strong performance, as Ash scored 17 of her own. 

For Oconto, it was Addisyn Viestenz leading the way with 14 points for the Blue Devils. Viestenz was the only player to make a three tonight for Oconto. The team as a whole went 13 for 22 at the free throw line, as they saw a 10 point deficit at the half grow to a 27 point loss thanks to five made threes from Ash. 

Sevastopol will travel to Peshtigo on Thursday, and Oconto will play non-conference against Valders on Tuesday. 

The top two teams in the Packerland will face off against each other on Saturday as Sevastopol and Oconto face off. 

Sevastopol has been nearly perfect so far this season, with one loss coming on December 20th to Bonduel 60-52. Sevastopol averages nearly sixty points per game on offense, which is the highest in the Packerland this season. The Pioneers lost both matchups against the Blue Devils last season, by a combined total of 18 points. 

For the Blue Devils, they have done a strong job replacing the offensive output of Liana Baxter from last season, as she averaged 19.6 points per game en route to a Unanimous Packerland Conference Player of the Year. Addisyn Viestenz currently sits second in scoring in the conference, and will go head to head against the top scorer, Bailey Rikkola. 

Tip in Oconto is set for 7:30 P.M. 

The Door County United swim team secures the win tonight over Kiel and Berlin. It was a close night, but the nine boys pulled it out and were able to get the job done. Well done!

The story of the Sevastopol girls' basketball season is still being written, but the pen was first put to paper much earlier than its season-opening win against Suring.

The first-place Pioneers are 11-1 entering their key matchup at Oconto on Saturday, with the Blue Devils breathing down their neck in second place. They are ranked seventh in the state at Division 5, entering the rankings earlier this season for the first time in decades.

At the helm is Ben Rikkola, who, along with his wife Beth, are former college basketball players on their way to coaching their second straight season with at least 15 victories. The defense is as impressive as their offense, led by their daughters Bailey and Naomi. Both girls are 1-2 when it comes to points and rebounds per game. Speaking to the NEW Radio Sports Network before the holiday break, Ben Rikkola credits the work that began nine years ago for their success now.

The Sevastopol Pioneers found no luck in their home gym Monday night as they fell to the Mishicot Indians  73-49.

Led by Kaden Kowalski's 21 points, the Indians jumped out to 38-26 lead in the first half and doubled that lead by the end of the game. The Indians also received strong performances from Nicholas Parma (16 points) and Kayden Schmidt (15 points).

Zaul Valdivia led the Pioneers with 17 points while Nick Peterson scored 10 points and Chase Haberli added nine points in the loss. 

Still undefeated in conference play, the Sevastopol Pioneers will look to extend their Packerland winning streak to 6 games with a win over NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy. 

Sevastopol has been led all season by Bailey and Naomi Rikkola who combine for 33.6 of the 52.4 points scored per game. Their true dominance however has been as a team on the defensive side of the ball. 9 of Sevastopol’s 11 games has seen the Pioneers opponents score under 40 points per game. The only teams to score over 40 points were Southern Door and the Pioneer’s only loss, Bonduel. 

NEW Lutheran comes into the matchup against Sevastopol .500 in both facets, overall and Packerland record. Ebony Sinclair has been a star in her minutes for the Blazers, as she has scored 14.6 points per game on an efficient 49.2% scoring from the field. The forward is nearing averaging a double-double, as she also sits at 9.9 rebounds per game.

The Sevastopol boys' basketball team will open their week with a non-conference home game against Mishicot.

The Pioneers ended last week on a sour note, losing to county-rival Gibraltar 74-49. Frankie DeYoung led the way with 12 points, while Daniel Castillo and Lucas Delsart each added 11 points in the loss for the Pioneers.

The Indians and the Pioneers share similar 2-8 records. They had a two-game winning streak snapped by Hilbert in a 72-42 decision on Friday. Kaden Kowalski leads the team with just over 12 points per game.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Institute.

It was a great meet today, and the boys had a series of really great swims. Hard work definitely pays off, and our times in the pool are proof of that. I could not have asked for more from our squad of nine. We placed 8th out of a field of 16, many of which are some of the strongest swim teams in the state. Some of these teams we won’t see again until state, and it was nice to get a look at what we’re coming up against in D-1. We will meet back with Plymouth and Berlin in a few weeks at the conference championship, and it’s anyone's for the taking right now. We finished just behind Plymouth today. To say I’m proud would be an understatement.

The Sevastopol girls' basketball team continued its hot start in Packerland Conference play with a 52-20 win over Kewaunee on Friday night.

The Pioneers' defense was up to its usual tricks, allowing just eight points to the Storm while the Rikkola sisters each outscored them. Naomi and Bailey Rikkola each scored 15 points while Kayla Ranly added 10 points in the win.

The Storm's top scorer was Emily Todd with seven points, including two of the team's six made shots from the field.

The Sevastopol Pioneers rode an 11-point halftime lead to their second victory of the season, beating Stockbridge 56-47.

A big reason for the Pioneers picking up their second win of the season was the scoring performances by Lucas Delsart and Frankie deYoung. Delsart scored 16 points, deYoung chipped in with  13 points, and two others scored at least six points. 

The Pioneers will go for win number three when they travel north to visit Gibraltar on Saturday. 

The Sevastopol Pioneers will take on the Stockbridge Panthers Thursday night in a non-conference matchup. 

The Pioneers have not taken the court in game action since December 20th, when they fell in conference action against Algoma 70-21. Sevastopol is led by Nick Peterson, who is averaging 8.2 points per game, with Frankie deYoung close behind with 6.1 points per game. Sevastopol is looking for their second win of the season, with their one win coming against Wausaukee. 

Stockbridge currently sits at 2-8 overall, with wins over Chesterton Academy and Saint Thomas Aquinas. Conner Funk and Gavin Cullen are the leading scorers for the Panthers so far this season, with the two players scoring 17.2 and 16.9 points respectively.

The Sevastopol Pioneer girls basketball team continued their dominance with a 59-34 road win over the Stockbridge Indians Tuesday night.  Naomi Rikkola scored a team-high 16 points, while her sister Bailey added 15 more to lead the Pioneers.  Kayla Ranly and Libby Ash chipped in 10 points a piece to help the cause.  

Sevastopol took a 25-15 lead into halftime before pulling away in the second half, outscoring Stockbridge 34-19 in the second frame. 

After suffering their first loss of the season right before the holiday break, the Sevastopol Pioneers head out on the road Tuesday night with a game at Oneida Nation.

The Rikkola girls scored 41 of the team's 52 points in a 60-52 loss to Bonduel before the winter storm gave their 2022 an early ending. The team had been 8-0 heading into the matchup.

The Eagles are 3-7 on the season and enter the game on a four-game losing streak. In their last game, Mariah Cloud scored 32 points but no one else could do much in a 59-45 loss to Gillett.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
