Algoma edges Sevastopol in close matchup

Sevastopol came up just short in a 30-28 loss to Algoma on Friday night in a matchup that went down to the wire.

Quarterback Logan Schuh opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run on the Pioneers’ first drive, but Algoma responded with two quick scores and a 14-6 lead after one quarter.

Schuh tied the game at 14 early in the second and then a 66-yard punt return touchdown from Bo Tanck swung momentum back to Sevastopol, giving them a 22-14 halftime lead.

The Wolves rallied in the second half with a pair of scores and late in the fourth quarter with two minutes remaining went up 30-22.

In the final minute, Schuh gave Sevastopol life capping a 54-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion to tie was stopped, sealing the narrow defeat.

Pioneers volleyball singes Blazers in five sets

The Sevastopol Pioneers survived a stern test late in its match against NEW Lutheran to beat them in five sets 3-2.

After winning the first two sets, the Pioneers had to rebound in the fifth set to win 25-13, 26-24, 18-25, 9-25, 15-12.

The Pioneers' leaders include Brynn Schartner (14 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs), Kendall Christiansen (16 assists and 11 digs), Leah Schopf, Adison Sawyer, and Hailey Bosman, who each had 13 digs, with Bosman serving five aces.

Next up is a tournament at Algoma on Saturday.

Pioneers shutout Vikings in shortened contest on 105.1 The GOAT

Four rushing touchdowns, a pick-six, and a lack of available bodies on the other sideline helped the Sevastopol Pioneers secure the 38-0 win over Gibraltar Friday night.

After forcing a shot punt on the opening possession, Logan Schuh drove the Pioneers to inside the five-yard line before Chase Haberli took it into the end zone for the game's first score. After another Vikings punt, Schuh engineered another touchdown drive, this time taking it in himself to extend the lead to 16-0. The Pioneers padded onto their lead their next time out on a short field with Bo Tanck punching it in from inside the five yard line for the touchdown.

The Vikings followed the Tanck touchdown with one of their more impressive drives of the evening before negative plays piled up, forcing them to dig deep into the playbook to try to pick up the first down. After milking the clock and calling a timeout, the Vikings called a trick play only to have it blown up by the Pioneers defense with a 68 yard interception returned for a touchdown by lineman Anthony Estevez.

The Pioneers would score their final touchdown on the heels of Tanck for his second score of the game.

Vikings head coach Mike Peck said after the game that his team was down several players entering halftime due to injuries, and made the hard decision to forfeit the second half in an effort to preserve the players he had remaining for its homecoming game next week rather than play the second half and risk the rest of the season.

Pioneers head coach Dan Judas was proud that his team started fast and carried that momentum on both sides of the ball, scoring on all four offensive possessions while forcing the Vikings to have negative yards on nearly half of their drives.

The Pioneers return to action next Friday when they play Algoma on the road at 7 p.m. The Vikings will try to recover in time to play Gillett for their homecoming next Friday in Fish Creek. 105.1 The GOAT will carry the game live beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Sevastopol honors Hall of Fame inductees ahead of rivalry game on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneers look to get back into the win column while honoring its past on Friday night when they host Gibraltar in Institute.

Before the game, the Pioneers will honor the following individuals and teams as their newest inductees into the school's Hall of Fame:

  • Ron Meikle stood out on the 1974-76 boys basketball teams that won back-to-back Bay Lakes Conference titles.
  • Dale Fuller, a member of the 1975-76 basketball team and later a Sevastopol girls basketball coach.
  • The 1983-84 wrestling team finished second in Class C at the state tournament. Wrestlers included Bill Bordeau, Brian Wilke, Keith Haen, Rob Ash, Leif Lautenbach, John Spahr, Ralus Wagner, Jesse Schartner, Dean DeFere, Pete Franklin, Dave Geitner, and Jeff Jorns. The team was coached by head coach Dan Hein and assisted by Ray Leonardson. Linda Ehlers, Bob Schnackel, Mike Ploor, and Brenda (Tanck) Tebon served as managers.
  • The 1984-85 wrestling team also earned second place at state in Class C.The wrestlers included John Spahr, Brad Tanck, Leif Lautenbach, Mark Ash, Brian Wilke, Bill Bordeau, Dave Geitner, Jeff Jorns, Troy Weis, Jesse Schartner, Jim Leonardson, and Ralus Wagner. The team was coached by head coach Dan Hein and assisted by Ray Leonardson. Cindy (Henschel) Sullivan and Stacy Meneau served as managers.

After the ceremony, the Pioneers hope to return from a 44-20 loss to Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas. In the battle between the #5 Titans and the #8 Pioneers, Logan Schuh threw for 153 yards and three touchdowns with Cash Kuehn on the receiving end of two scores. Despite having their streak of 50+ point games halted, the 22 points scored by the Pioneers marked the first points allowed by the Titans all season long.

The Vikings saw their chance to win a second straight game thwarted by Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran last week in a 43-26 loss. Trailing 27-0 at the break, the comeback was led by running back Sean Neal, who scored four times en route to a 216-yard evening on the ground. Giovanni Mercier threw for 45 yards, 30 of which were brought in by Wyatt Bultman.

Tim Kowols and Dylan Kaye will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Pioneers volleyball look to extend winning streak at Oconto

The Packerland Conference match follows a recent triangular event hosted by Sevastopol, which saw them compete against Kohler and Roncalli. Kuehn's big night not enough for Sevastopol

On just four receptions, sophomore Cash Kuehn exploded for three touchdowns and 125 receiving yards in Sevastopol’s 44-20 loss to Lena/Aquinas Friday night.

The Pioneers’ offense struggled to gain momentum against the Titans’ strong defense, which had not allowed a single point all season until Friday. Kuehn was on the receiving end of nearly everything senior quarterback Logan Schuh completed, as he finished with 150 passing yards and three scores.

For Lena/Aquinas, it was their toughest challenge yet, but they remain a perfect 4-0. Sevastopol, now 3-1, was handed its first loss of the season.

The Pioneers will return home next Friday, September 19, for a matchup against Gibraltar. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be carried on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Road Trip to Bonduel Unsuccessful for Pioneers

The Sevastopol girls volleyball team came up short Monday night in Bonduel, falling 3-1 in four sets.

The Pioneers struggled to find their rhythm early, dropping the first two sets only scoring a combined score of 24 (8-25, 16-25). They regrouped in the third, though, earning a 25-19 win to extend the match.

The final set was tightly contested, but Sevastopol’s rally fell just short in a 25-23 loss. Despite the defeat, the Pioneers showed resilience in bouncing back after a slow start.

Now 7-6 on the young season, Sevastopol will look to rebound Thursday when they host Peshtigo at 7 p.m.

The Bears are 2-2 on the season after making it to state last year. One of those losses came against the Pioneers in a tournament. The Pioneers won that match in straight sets 25-17 and 25-23.

First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sevastopol Runs Past Suring for Third Straight Victory

The Sevastopol Pioneers continued their strong start to the season with a 50-22 victory over Suring on Friday night, improving to 3-0 behind another dominant offensive showing.

Quarterback Logan Schuh accounted for four total touchdowns, piling up 132 yards on the ground and 95 through the air to lead the Pioneers’ attack. He was joined in the backfield by a pair of standout performances, as Ray Johnson rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and Bo Tanck added 145 rushing yards and a score. Schuh also connected with Cash Kuehn on a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Defensively, Sevastopol came up big with three interceptions. Cash Kuehn, Chase Haberli, and Roman LeClair each hauled in a pick to keep momentum in the Pioneers’ favor.

Sevastopol’s balanced attack on both sides of the ball has them rolling early at 3-0, and they’ll look for another statement win when they travel to state-ranked Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m.

Linnan, Newton pace Pioneers at De Pere XC Invitational

The Sevastopol Pioneers battled nearly three dozen teams on Thursday on the campus of UW-Green Bay as a part of the De Pere Invitational.

For the boys, Paxton Linnan broke the 20-minute barrier to take 136th overall in 19:52. They did not have enough runners to score as a team. On the girls' side, Breiah Newton's 5K time of 22:02.3 was good enough for a Top 75 finish as the team took 30th with a score of 792.
