Pioneers, Storm looking to bounce back

Sevastopol is looking for their first win on Thursday when they head to Kewaunee to face a 2-2 Storm team. Sevastopol is coming off of a loss to Sturgeon Bay, while Kewaunee is coming off of a 10-3 loss in Crivitz. There will be two games, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 PM in Kewaunee.

Softball: Pioneers outlast Clippers

In a high-scoring first game, it was the Sevastopol Pioneers who would get the edge over the Sturgeon Bay Clippers 12-9. The Pioneers would get four RBIs and three hits from Jolene Luedtke and would also get two hits from Bailey Rikkola and Alaina Schopf. Libby Ash would get the win pitching. Sevastopol also won the non-conference game, 15-7. Sevastopol will visit Kewaunee on Thursday. For Sturgeon Bay, they will host Algoma on Thursday, in search of their first win.

Pioneers gain bragging rights over Gibraltar on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneers ended their spring season on a high note in Institute Saturday afternoon beating Gibraltar 56-40.

The Pioneers started fast with a 8-0 lead thanks to a long touchdown play to Cole Dvorak from Jack de Young. Spencer Evenson forced Gibraltar quarterback Luke Steebs to fumble on one side of the ball and capped off the ensuing drive with a touchdown run to make it 15-0.

The Vikings got onto the scoreboard in the second quarter when Spencer Krause rushed in from inside the 10 yard line. The Pioneers' Logan Beyer would return the favor of his own before the Vikings scored on a short pass to Giuseppe Mercier from Steebs. Dvorak found the endzone on another long touchdown pass from de Young before the Vikings would end the half on a five yard pass to Krause from Steebs.

The Pioneers would open the third quarter with a pair of scores bookending another Vikings turnover on the fumble by Steebs. Dvorak and Beyer were on the receiving end of long touchdown passes by de Young to extend the Pioneers lead. The Vikings would answer with a trick play that saw offensive lineman Jack Duffy scamper in from 60 yards out, only to have Alex Valdivia find the end zone himself to make it 50-26. Steebs found the endzone on a 10 yard rushing play to narrow the lead, but Evenson put an exclamation point on the game for the Pioneers for his second touchdown of the game. Steebs found Krause one more time in the final seconds of the game to bring the game to within two scores, but with not enough time to get any closer.

The Pioneers finish the school year with a win in both the fall and the spring, likely one of the few teams in the state that can boast that. The Vikings end the spring 0-5.
