Sevastopol High School Archives for 2026-02

Pioneers defense holds on in final possession

Sevastopol and N.E.W. Lutheran pushed the game down to the wire after plenty of missed free throws in the final minutes.

A miss at the free-throw line with 7.5 seconds left allowed the Blazers, who trailed by one, an opportunity for a shot to win, but strong defense forced it errant and the Pioneers held on for a 56-55 victory.

Erasing a six-point halftime deficit, Sevastopol exchanged the lead with N.E.W. multiple times throughout the game but ultimately held on when it mattered most.

The Pioneers forced a turnover with nine seconds left and were fouled to create a bonus free-throw opportunity to try to pull away further.

Although Sevastopol didn’t convert at the line the way it would have liked, the Pioneers were able to pull out a road win over the Blazers, continuing the trend of following a loss with a win.

Andrew Wiesner led the way with 25 points, while Logan Schuh chipped in 13 points and Bo Tanck added 11 points.

Sevastopol, the No. 10 seed, will look to build momentum when it faces No. 7 seed Hilbert in another road matchup March 3 in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Pioneers bounced back from a cancelled contest against NEW Lutheran and a loss to Kewaunee with a 61-59 win over Oconto. It was their first win against the Blue Devils in approximately 20 years. A big reason why was Logan Schuh, who scored 13 of his team-high 17 points after the break. Andrew Wiesner scored 15 points, and Cash Kuehn added 10 points in the Pioneers' win.

The Bulldogs also beat the Blue Devils in their last game thanks to Dominik Baxter's 28 points and Brady Polzin's 15 points in a 59-51 victory.

It was the Pioneers' first win against Oconto since 2003.

Pioneers boys play at home against Blue Devils

Rest and a little Vitamin C will hopefully allow the Sevastopol boys basketball team to return to the court on Friday when they host Oconto.

Illnesses were to blame for the team canceling its matchup against NEW Lutheran earlier this week. Bo Tanck led the way with 22 points while Cash Kuehn and Logan Schuh also registered double-figures. The Pioneers have wins over Gibraltar and Chilton in their last five games.

A 47-45 win over NEW Lutheran has been the lone bright spot in a 1-4 stretch for the Blue Devils. Mason Colvin leads the team with 14.1 ppg while Hayden Petersen averages 11.1 ppg and Lars Saldana pitches in 9.1 ppg. All three scoring leaders are sophomores.

Sevastopol scores win for Violet over Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneers scored 28 of the game's final 37 points Monday to walk out of its gym with not just the 65-49 win over Gibraltar, but $13,000 for the family of eight-year-old Violet Tanck.

The two teams traded buckets early in the game following the emotional tribute to Tanck, who is battling a rare form of Ewing sarcoma and has family members on the boys and girls basketball teams. The Pioneers had four players score at least five points in the half led by Logan Schuh, Bo Tanck, and Andrew Wiesner. The Vikings were able to keep things close thanks to three-pointers from Marco Jauregui, Kayin Jackson, and Aaron Brey.

A flagrant foul call against Wyatt Bultman turned the momentum towards the Pioneers as Schuh hit both free throws and the team hit a shot on the ensuing possession to stretch their lead from two to a 31-25 advantage at the break.

The Vikings came out hot in the second half, flipping the game from a eight-point deficit to a 40-37 lead with over 11 minutes to go in the game. The Pioneers' defense clamped down after that, allowing just nine points the rest of the way while Wiesner, Schuh, and Tanck continue pour in points.

Wiesner, Tanck, and Schuh all scored 14 points to pace the Pioneers while Jackson scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Vikings along with 11 points from Aaron Brey.

The Vikings will try to break their skid again on Thursday when they visit Brussels to face Southern Door.

Sevastopol, Gibraltar battle for #WarriorViolet on 105.1 The GOAT

For the second time this season, the battle on the Sevastopol High School basketball court will take a back seat to a much more important fight off it.

Monday’s boys basketball game between Sevastopol and Gibraltar will be played in honor of 8-year-old Violet Tanck, a Sevastopol Elementary School student who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of Ewing sarcoma. The third-grader has already had a kidney and some lymph nodes removed and has months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments ahead at Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Both teams are coming off losses on Friday. The Pioneers fell short against Algoma 66-51. Sevastopol was trailing by just two at the break, but was then outscored 37-24 in the second creating more distance that they couldn't recover from. Bo Tanck and Reid Kacmarynski combined for 28, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. The Pioneers have split their last four games. Cash Kuehn leads the Pioneers in scoring at 12.2 ppg while Logan Schuh leads the squad in rebounds (6.1 rpg) and assists (2.7 apg).

In Peshtigo, two separate offensive droughts sent the Vikings to a 72-45 loss to Peshtigo on Friday night. The Vikings held their own early thanks to 3-pointers from Marco Jauregui, Kayin Jackson and Aaron Brey. The Bulldogs blew the game open late in the first half with a 15-0 run led by Baxter that put them ahead 40-26 at the break. Despite some early buckets from the Bulldogs, the Vikings were able to threaten early in the second half, forcing a timeout when they trimmed the lead to nine points with just over 14 minutes left. Peshtigo would not allow another Vikings field goal the rest of the game. Brey paced the Vikings with 14 points, Jauregui added 10 and Wyatt Bultman chipped in nine.

To support Violet and her family, a bake and soup sale, a miracle minute, a free-throw competition and paper butterfly sales will take place during Monday night’s slate of basketball games. The JV tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m.
