Ten Pioneers make Packerland Conference teams

Ten Sevastopol Pioneers were honored last week with Packerland Conference honors.

 

Leading the way was the school's softball team, which won the regional championship and advanced all the way to the sectional semifinal.

Vikineers fall to Sheboygan Lutheran

Sheboygan Lutheran's Maria Zylstra was a one-girl wrecking crew as she led her team to 8-0 victory over Sevastopol/Gibraltar Thursday afternoon.

 

Zylstra scored six goals in the contest while Taylor Batt and Alexis Beger registered the other tallies for Sheboygan Lutheran. 

 

The Vikineers' season ends with a 3-11-3 record.

 

 

Pioneers softball's season ends against Edgar

The combination of five team errors and a clutch pitching performance from Edgar's Makayla Wirkus doomed the Sevastopol Pioneers softball team in their 11-0 loss in the sectional final played in Plover.

 

Edgar jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added another three in the third inning to put a stranglehold on the game. Libby Ash took the loss as she pitched the game's first five innings, giving up six runs (three earned) with six strikeouts. Addison Schauske pitched the final two innings, striking out four while giving up five runs (three earned). 

 

Wirkus pounded the strike zone with 75 percent of her 78 pitches registering as strikes. She went all seven innings without allowing a baserunner while striking out eight Pioneers.

Sevastopol softball looks to punch state ticket against Edgar

A trip to state is on the line in Steven Point Thursday afternoon when Sevastopol plays Edgar in the WIAA Sectional Final.

 

The Pioneers went to the brink in their Tuesday sectional final, eventually beating Laona/Wabeno 6-5 over in ten innings. Addison Schauske was the winning pitcher, going 6 innings while allowing 4 hits, 1 earned run, & striking out 6. Bailey Rikkola hit 3-6 with 2 stolen bases & 2 RBIs. Jolene Luedtke went 3-4 with 3 runs scored. Kristen Daubner went 3-5 with a double & 2 RBIs. Alaina Schopf went 3-5 and Addison Schauske went 2-3 with a double.

 

Edgar punched their ticket to the sectional final with a 7-0 victory over Newman Catholic, which did not register a hit in the contest. After losing three straight games in early May, Edgar enters the sectional final on a nine-game winning streak.

 

The two teams will play at Woyak Complex in Stevens Point at 4:30 p.m.

Vikineers soccer opens tournament at Sheboygan Lutheran

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar soccer team will look to extend their season Thursday afternoon when they battle Sheboygan Lutheran in their opening-round matchup.

 

The Vikineers (3-10) were routed by New Holstein 8-0 its last time out. They had split their two previous games. 

 

Sheboygan Lutheran finished its campaign 11-7, but they are playing their best soccer of the season. They have won their four five games by a margin of 22-5. 

 

Kick off is set for 4 p.m.

Pioneers win thriller over Laona/Wabeno in extra-innings

The Sevastopol Pioneers advanced in the WIAA softball sectional tournament Tuesday afternoon with a narrow 6-5 victory over Laona/Wabeno in ten innings.  After the Pioneers scored the first 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, Laona answered back with 1 in both the 2nd & 3rd innings. After 4 innings, Laona was leading 4-3. Laona then went up 5-3 with a solo home run after a 5th inning Pioneer pitching change that brought in Addison Schauske for Libby Ash. Jolene Luedtke led the bottom of the 5th inning off with a single to right field. Kristen Daubner singled, advancing Luedtke to 2nd base, then Alaina Schopf brought Luedtke in on a single to center field. The Pioneers were still down 5-4 but held Laona to no runs the rest of the game. In the bottom of the 7th, Luedtke singled to left field & Daubner singled to right field. Schauske gets up with 2 outs & 2 strikes & doubles on a fly ball to right field, bringing in the tying run, Luedtke. The 8th & 9th innings were scoreless, but Sevastopol loaded up the bases in the bottom of the 10th after singles by Schauske, Ash, & Naomi Rikkola. Leadoff batter, Bailey Rikkola, singled up the middle to bring in courtesy runner Johanna Andreae for the 6-5 win.

The Pioneers will play in Plover against Edgar on Thursday afternoon at 4:30pm with a state berth on the line.
