Pioneers see changes on its coaching staffs

Some new faces will be guiding teams at Sevastopol this upcoming school year.

The resignation of Superintendent Kyle Luedtke did not just open a void in that office, but also on the bench for the boys' basketball team. That spot was filled earlier this spring when Tom Ash slid over from the girls' team to the boys' team to fill that role.

Annie Kapolnek has stepped down as the cross country coach for the Pioneers after guiding the squad to appearance in the state meet during the 2021 fall season.

New head football coach Dan Judas is still looking for someone to fill his spot as an assistant coach.

McHugh misses out on Olympic Trials

Sevastopol alum Max McHugh will have to wait another four years to qualify for the Olympics in Los Angeles after coming up short in his bid Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

McHugh's time of 1:01:25 for the 100m breaststroke was good for the 26th best out of 81 competitors. All eight qualifiers for Sunday's were under 60 seconds. This marked the second time McHugh has represented the University of Minnesota and his hometown at the Olympic Trials, previously competing for a spot in the Tokyo Olympics.

Sevastopol alum McHugh ready for big stage at Olympic Trials

Sevastopol alum Max McHugh makes another bid at making the United States Olympic Swim Team beginning this Saturday when the trials occur inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The former state and NCAA champion, Door County YMCA product, and University of Minnesota swimmer McHugh begins his journey toward Paris on Saturday at 10 a.m. when he competes in the 100m breaststroke prelims. The Door County YMCA breaks down what happens if he gets out of the prelims:

At the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials that were held in Omaha, he tied for seventh-place in the finals with a time of 1:00.56.

Volleyball team, four others to be inducted into Sevastopol Athletic Hall of Fame

A team, a coach, and three student-athletes will be a part of the next Athletic Hall of Fame class at Sevastopol.

The 1984/1985 volleyball team, student-athletes Kirk Bushman, Haley Moeller Heimstead, and Sara Junion Laughrin, and coach Darrell Severson will be inducted at a special ceremony to take place ahead of that night's football game. This will be the third class inducted into the Hall of Fame after it was founded in 2022 by Sevastopol alumni. The Sevastopol Athletic Hall of Fame is co-sponsored by the Pioneer Athletic Booster Club and the Sevastopol athletic department.

“It’s great to see our Hall of Fame growing and having this opportunity to establish pride, preserve our athletic history, and honor our former student-athletes and coaches for their achievements and contributions to Sevastopol High School Athletics has been wonderful,” said Sevastopol High School Athletic Director, Brooke Tanck.
