Pioneers softball soared over by Eagles

Two big innings by the Almond-Bancroft Eagles proved too much for the Sevastopol Pioneers softball team in their 10-3 loss on Thursday, ending their stint in the WIAA Tournament.

The Eagles scored four times in the first inning, taking advantage of a RBI double and a bases-clearing triple in the frame. The Pioneers would claw back into the game in the sixth inning when Addison Schauske homered, bringing Naomi Rikkola and Jolene Luedtke along for the ride. The Eagles would take the drama out of it in their half of the inning, scoring six times on six hits, two walks, and an error. The Pioneers went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh via the strikeout to see their season come to a close.

Schauske took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing all 10 runs on 10 hits while striking out two.

United earns draw against Jets

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar United completed their season on Thursday with a 2-2 draw against Roncalli.

The United peppered Jets netminder Maygen Ertman with 11 shots on net, finding the back of it twice. The only problem for the United was Lauren Stangel, who scored both of the Jets' goals in the game with Kylie Meister and Bella Jacky earning the assists.

Sevastopol's Dadam, Fellner end season with personal records

The Sevastopol track season came to a close in Rosholt on Thursday with some good performances to end things on the right foot.

Jarius Dadam (pole vault) and Caitlyn Fellner (400m) finished in seventh place in their respective events with personal records. The 4x200m relay was the closest to qualifying with a sixth place finish.

Pioneers softball put out Blazers on U-102.1

For the third time this season, the Sevastopol Pioneers softball team did not need the full seven innings to get past NEW Lutheran, beating them 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday to advance in the WIAA Tournament.

The Pioneers pressured Blazers pitcher Lexie Meerstein early, with Addison Schauske singling in Naomi Rikkola to make it 1-0 at the end of the first inning. After a scoreless second, the Pioneers batted around in the third inning, scoring five runs and registering six hits in the frame. Schauske and Adison Sawyer each singled in runs, while Libby Ash's knock brought home two.

The Blazers would offer a retort in the fourth inning, with Meerstein collecting her second hit and Abby Kirchner reaching on a single. Schauske bore down from there, striking out five of the next six batters she faced to earn the victory and notch ten strikeouts along the way.

The Pioneers would effectively end the game in their half of the fourth inning, scoring another four runs on three hits and two walks in the frame.

Ash, Schauske, and Kayla Ranly posted multi-hit games for the Pioneers, with Ash, Schauske, and Sierra Cain driving in runs. Meerstein had two of the three hits for the Blazers.

The Pioneers will have to wait until Wednesday afternoon to learn who their opponent will be because the game between Almond/Bancroft and Tigerton was postponed to Wednesday due to storms. An Almond/Bancroft win would send the Pioneers there on Thursday, while a Tigerton victory would allow the Pioneers to host another game.

Sevastopol softball opens tournament against conference rival on U-102.1

The Sevastopol Pioneers will kick off their WIAA Tournament run with a familiar foe on Tuesday when they welcome NEW Lutheran to Institute.

The Pioneers hope to regain their form in Tuesday's matchup against the Blazers. They have dropped five of their last six games, including a sweep at the hands of Algoma last time out. Their last Packerland Conference doubleheader sweep was against the Blazers on April 30th, when they outscored their visitors 31-1 across the two games. The combination of Addison Schauske and Libby Ash allowed just three hits while striking out 16.

The Blazers' sweep of Gibraltar/Washington Island on May 10th are the only wins they have posted since April 20th, which is a stretch of 12 games.

Jacob Nate and Tim Kowols will have the call from Sevastopol Town Park on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 2:15 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 2:30 p.m.

Pioneers drop a pair to Algoma

The Sevastopol Pioneers lost two games to the Algoma Wolves, 4-0 and 9-6, on Tuesday afternoon, as the Wolves claimed the outright Packerland Conference title.

The Pioneers managed four hits in game one, with Naomi Rikkola, Addison Schauske, Libby Ash, and Addison Sawyer picking up a hit a piece.  Schalke was the losing pitcher, allowing six hits but only one earned run with six strikeouts and one walk in the 4-0 opener loss.

In the nightcap, Rikkola went 3-4 with two doubles, knocking in two runs for the Pioneers, with Lyvia Duessler, Sawyer, and Jolene Luedtke going 2-4.   Libby Ash took the loss, allowing two earned runs in five innings.

United spooked by Ghosts

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar soccer team could not get the offense going against its visitors as Kaukauna toppled the United 7-0.

The Ghosts scored three goals in the first half and chipped in four more in the second half to take the road win. It was the third time in four tries that the United were shut out, including 4-0 loss to Martin Luther and a 5-0 loss to Manitowoc Lincoln at Saturday's Kiel Tournament. They did beat New Holstein in that tournament 3-0.

The United are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Peshtigo.
