Sevastopol, Gibraltar look for first conference win on 105.1 The GOAT

More than just bragging rights are at stake on Tuesday night when Gibraltar and Sevastopol meet for the first time this season in Institute.

Both teams are searching for win number two and their first Packerland Conference victory of the 2023-2024 campaign. Sevastopol head coach Kyle Luedtke says he has been working on changing the team's culture after several losing seasons in recent years. In their last game, the Algoma Wolves led from start to finish Thursday night, defeating the Pioneers 54-40 at Fulwiler Fieldhouse. The Pioneers would cut the lead to 11 points early in the second half, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. Frankie De Young paced Sevastopol with 12 points as the Pioneers fought hard and outscored Algoma 32-31 in the second half.

For Gibraltar, head coach Travis Ward hopes a breakthrough performance by Liam Lindenberg is the start of other players filling up the stat sheet in support of Braden Sitte. He hit four three-pointers in the second half to spur the run alongside Sitte. The Vikings had chances to tie the game late, but the Bulldogs were able to clamp down to prevent Gibraltar from completing their comeback and taking the matchup 61-56. McMahon led all scorers with 23 points, and Baxter added 22 points for the Bulldogs in their victory. Sitte led the Vikings with 20 points, while Lindenberg's six threes gave him 18 points in a supporting role.

Tim Kowols will have the action on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

Pioneer girls find shooting groove vs. Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneer girls' basketball team hit their shots early and often in their 66-22 win over Gibraltar Friday night in Fish Creek.

Coupled with holding the Vikings scoreless for the first six minutes of the game, the Pioneers were able to jump out to a 21-0 advantage and a 47-10 halftime lead thanks to seven made three-pointers. Kayla Ranly and Libby Ash got out to fast starts as they hit the majority of their points in the first half to dig the Vikings deep in a hole. Andie Schar scored six points late in the half to narrow the gap to 37 before the break.

With a running clock and both teams emptying their bench for much of the second half, they played much closer after the break. Ranly ended her night with a game-high 20 points, while Ash added 19 and Naomi Rikkola contributed 14 points. Andie Schar led the way for the Vikings with 13 points while four other players chipped in with two points.

The Pioneers are already looking ahead to their battle next week against Kewaunee for chance to take a one-game lead in the Packerland Conference.

The Pioneers would cut the lead down to 11 points early in the second half, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Pioneer girls top Algoma

In a matchup of two top teams in the Packerland Conference, the Sevastopol Pioneers prevailed over the Algoma Wolves in a tough,low-scoring 37-30 win at Sevastopol High School.

Sevastopol held a 15-12 lead at halftime and outscored the Wolves 22-18 in the second half to win.  The Pioneers were 8/11 from the free-throw line to salt away the game.

The Pioneers used a balanced attack, with three players scoring double figures. Katie Spude knocked down 13 points, Izzy Andreae scored 11, and Kayla Ranly added ten more.

Rylee Zimmerman led Algoma with 11 points and Jaydn Nellis with nine.

Pioneers, Wolves tangle in Packerland tilt

Two of the top teams in the Packerland Conference will meet Tuesday night in Institute when Sevastopol welcomes Algoma in girls' basketball.

In their last game, the Sevastopol girls' basketball team held a 31-9 advantage at halftime and didn't look back as they beat Sturgeon Bay 55-25. The Pioneers got their fast start thanks to 12 first-half points from Naomi Rikkola and 11 from Katherine Spude and a suffocating defense that kept the Clippers off the scoreboard. Rikkola would continue her assault in the second half, scoring a game-high 25 points. Kayla Ranly picked up her game in the second half, scoring eight of her 13 points after the break.

Algoma head coach Mark Zastrow got what he wanted for his birthday last Thursday: a 51-28 bounce-back victory over Peshtigo. The Wolves never let the Bulldogs in the game as they dominated the first half, taking a 29-8 lead into the break. A big reason why is how often the Wolves got to the free-throw line, as they made 12 of 19 in the first half. They would make 24 of their 35 free throws on the evening. The scoring was balanced up and down the line-up, with Ryley Zimmerman finishing her day with 12 points, Jaydn Nellis adding 11 points, Brooke Mattson contributing eight points, and Therese Gerdmann chipping seven.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Pioneers girls cruise past Clippers

The Sevastopol girls' basketball team held a 31-9 advantage at halftime and didn't look back as they beat Sturgeon Bay 55-25.

The offense started to open up in the second half for the Clippers with Dasha Yeltysheva leading the way with seven points and Regan Kasten contributing six points.

SBS wrestlers hold their own in quad

Considering they forfeited at least five weight classes in all three of their matches on Thursday, the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team competed well against tough competition with more complete rosters at the Fox Valley Lutheran quad meet.

SBS lost to Luxemburg-Casco 72-3, Green Bay Preble 45-36, and Fox Valley Lutheran 46-28. Giving up five weight classes is the equivalent of giving teams a 30-0 lead before a match even takes place. Ethan DeNamur went 3-0 on the evening, picking up pins against the Hornets and Foxes while winning by decision against the Spartans.
