Packerland soccer games scheduled for Thursday

Soccer teams in Door and Kewaunee Counties will be busy Thursday afternoon as a full slate of matches is scheduled.

Matches include Sevastopol/Gibraltar hosting NEW Lutheran at Sevastopol and Kewaunee traveling to Sturgeon Bay. Both matches start at 6 p.m.

Big 3rd inning not enough for Sevastopol softball

Sevastopol's six-run third inning was not enough for the Pioneers on Tuesday against Algoma. The Wolves pounded Pioneer pitching winning the game 19-8. The game was played at Algoma. Samantha Differt, Karley Schram, and Abigail Hoevar all contributed in the thir inning with RBIs for the Pioneers. Schram and Differt each ended up with multiple hits.

These two teams will meet up again on Thursday, this time at Sevastopol with the first pitch at 5 PM.

Pollman leads Pioneers with no-no over Algoma

Robby Pollman had another dominating performance on the mound for Sevastopol on Tuesday. Pollman pitched a 5-inning no-hitter in the Pioneers 12-0 win over Algoma on the road. He also contributed at the plate driving in two runs. Nathan Stenzel had three RBIs while Josh Pflieger, Ethan Kroll and Jaden Sawyer all had two hits.

The two teams will meet again at Sevastopol on Thursday, first pitch at 5 PM.

Girls jump their way to titles at Door County Classic

If it involved jumping, there's a good chance the Sevastopol girls' track team won it at Monday's Door County Classic in Fish Creek.

Zoe Kuehn won the long jump and triple jump while Laci Lautenbach won the high jump and Mya Ploor won the pole vault. Olivia Stenzel won three events, capturing titles in the 400, 800, and 1600 meter runs. The girls 4 x 200 team also won the Door County Classic, registering a time of 1:57.

On the boys' side, Kiegan Sargent can claim fastest boy in Door County honors with a 12.16 winning time in the 100-meter dash while also winning the long jump with a leap of over 19 feet. Kyle Carlson captured the 800-meter title with a time of 2:12.

Sevastopol football among top athletic programs

Sevastopol has had a very strong football program ever since they moved to 8-man football. Loses have been few and far between and that success culminated in a state championship last fall. The Pioneers defeated Luck 38-30 in a game that didn't look like would be a win after the first quarter. Sevastopol trailed 16-0 after 15 minutes. They also trailed by 8 at the half and 8 going into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers were able to rally in the fourth and win the game 38-30 when Nathan Stenzel ran in a touchdown.

The answer to Wednesday's trivia question was 16, which was the deficit Sevastopol faced after the first quarter in the state championship game. Congratulations to Preston Lemm who answered the question correctly!

Max McHugh becomes All-American as a freshman

2018 Sevastopol graduate Max McHugh became the first ever collegiate freshman to earn NCAA  All-American status from Door County. Competing in Austin, Texas, McHugh first swam the 100 breaststroke and swam a 50.30 in the qualifier. Then in the finals swam 50.52 and placed third in the nation in the 100 breaststroke.

Then on the final day of the NCAA Championships Max was seeded eighth the 200 breaststroke and swam a time of 1:51.36 in prelims. Seeded third in the finals, McHugh swam a 1:49.41. His time was good enough for second place in the country.

To be an All-American in NCAA swimming you must finish in the top eight at the NCAA Championships. So in the 2019 Championships, not only did Max McHugh become the first ever Door County graduate to become All-American as a freshman, he did it twice in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.

His time in the 100 breaststroke was the fourth fastest time in the event in United States history. In the 200 breaststroke, McHugh swam the sixth fastest time ever recorded in U.S. history.

Next up for Max and his older brother Conner will be the Olympic Trials in the summer of 2020 with an eye on the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. The United States can only take two breaststorkers in each event.

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a prize.

Sevastopol picks up close victory

Sevastopol was able to recover from their opening day loss to Southern Door and pick up a victory over Gibraltar 7-6. Allison Daubner led the way for the Pioneers on the mound picking up the win and at the plate going 2-3. Karley Schram hit the big blow of the game with a three-run home run. Abby Hocevar also had a good day at the plate going 2-3.

Sevastopol's next game will be against conference rival Peshtigo at home on Monday, first pitch at 5 PM.

Sevastopol tipped by Gibraltar

Jaden Sawyer and Nathan Stenzel each had two RBI but it was not enough in Sevastopol's 7-6 loss to rival Gibraltar. It was a complete flip of last year's contest in Fish Creek when the Pioneers actually no-hit the Vikings in one of the first games of the weather-shortened season. Jacob Pfleger was the pitcher of record in the loss, recording four outs while giving up a run on two hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Sevastopol baseball's thrilling opening games

Last year Sevastopol baseball won a thrilling game on opening day. This year opening day was another thriller but the Pioneers didn't like the result as much. The start of the 2018 baseball season saw Sevastopol play in a slugfest on their home field against Algoma. The final ended up being 13-12 in favor of the home team.

On Tuesday Sevastopol held a 4-0 lead and then a 6-1 to Southern Door. The Eagles, however, were able to come back in the final two innings scoring four in the 6th inning and two in the 7th to win it in walk-off fashion. Derik LeCaptain singled home the winning run.

Sevastopol hopes to have the same success in game two that they had last year. The Pioneers played Algoma again the very next day and clobbered the Wolves 22-5 in Algoma. Sevastopol heads to Gibraltar on Thursday for game two this season.

Wednesday's trivia question asked what the final score of last year's opening day game was. Congratulations to David Kacmarynski who correctly answered that the final score was 13-12!

Sevastopol softball drops opener

Sevastopol softball fell to Southern Door 15-0 in three innings on Tuesday. The Pioneers will seek their first victory on Thursday when they travel to Gibraltar with the first pitch coming at 5 PM.

Sevastopol baseball loses in heartbreaking fashion

The Sevastopol baseball team got off to a great start against Southern Door on Tuesday but could not hold their lead in the end. The Pioneers led 4-0 after three innings and 6-1 after the top of the sixth. Southern Door would score four in the sixth and then walk it off in the seventh. Derik LeCaptain's single drove home the winning run for the Eagles.

Jaden Sawyer had two hits to lead the Pioneers. Robby Polman pitched the first four innings for Sevastopol and only allowed one run and struck out five.

Sevastopol will head up to Gibraltar on Thursday with the first pitch coming at 5 PM.
