Football: Pioneers drop high scoring matchup

The Sevastopol Pioneers fell to the NEW Lutheran-Oneida Nation-Providence Academy Blazers on Friday by a final score of 54-36. This loss drops their record to 0-2 on the season. The Pioneers will be the visitors on the scorecard the next time they play, when they face Sturgeon Bay on April 23rd.

Unique season comes to a close

Sevastopol’s memorable Spring season ended with a 1-1 day at the sectional tournament and a chance to participate in the sectional championship. In the first match, Sevastopol swept Mayville, winning the first set 26-24. The next two sets were more lopsided with wins of 25-11 and 25-15.

In the match to win sectionals, the Pioneers took St. Mary’s Springs to four sets. The first set went 27-25 in Springs’ favor, the next set would go Sevastopol’s way with a 25-18 win. In set three and set four it would be Springs on top with a 25-21 and 25-20 victory. Sevastopol would be sectional runner-ups.

Sevastopol opens up sectionals a two seed

A successful season and regional tournament all amount to Tuesday’s game where the Pioneers are two wins away from capturing a sectional championship. After defeating Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay, the Pioneers will take on Mayville High School. Mayville flies into the matchup with a 7-4 record and wins over Oakfield in five sets and a championship game win over Horicon.

The winner will advance to the sectional championship. The game is set to take place in New Holstein at 7:00 P.M.

Volleyball: Pioneers crowned champs

The Sevastopol Pioneers swept through their regional tournament on their home court on Saturday and will advance to sectionals. In the first round, the Pioneers beat Southern Door in three seats, ending the Eagles season. Sevastopol broke down the Eagles in the first two sets, winning each of them 25-13. The third and final set was much closer, but Sevastopol would still get the victory, 25-22. Against the Eagles, Madi Volkmann had 19 kills, Emma Stueber contributed 20 assists and 3 serves, Bailey Rikkola had 18 digs and Bekah Andreae had 5 blocks.

In the title game, Sevastopol was able to get their vengeance over Sturgeon Bay. In the game that had the most at stake, the Pioneers downed the Clippers in three sets. Sevastopol won set one 25-19, then won the following two 25-17. In the championship matchup, Sasha Laaksonen had 20 assists, Sam Differt had 13 kills, Madi Volkmann had 10 kills, Bailey Rikkola racked up 17 digs, and Zoe Kuehn had five blocks.

With the wins the Pioneers are now a successful 13-3 on the season. They also advance to sectionals where they face Chilton on Tuesday.

Sevastopol victorious heading into tournament

In a non-conference matchup that gave the Pioneers valuable reps before the regional tournament, Sevastopol dominated the first two sets against Gresham Community. Sevastopol took set one 25-8 and then set two 25-10. Gresham tightened the gap in the third set but not enough, as the Pioneers took set three 25-20. Madi Volkmann had 14 kills, Sasha Laaksonen collected 15 assists accompanied by four aces and Bailey Rikkola had 16 digs and four aces as well.

Sevastopol is the one seed in the regional tournament and will host Southern Door on Saturday.

Sevastopol battles non-conference foe in preparation

Coming off a rare conference loss and set to host the regional tournament as a one seed, Sevastopol will host Gresham Community on Thursday. Sevastopol lost to Sturgeon Bay in five sets this week, and will look to turn things around and remain heated up heading into the tournament. Their opponent, Gresham Community, is no slouch as they come into the matchup with a 7-1 record. They have not played a Packerland team this season. What remains to be seen is how Sevastopol will rotate players, as this game will have zero postseason implications.

Sturgeon Bay battles Sevastopol ahead of volleyball tournament start

Two of the better teams in the Packerland Conference battle on Monday night ahead of the start of the WIAA Alternative Fall Season Tournament.

Both teams have had long layoffs in between matches thanks to spring break schedules. The Clippers are 6-3 and last won on March 22nd with a 3-0 sweep of Algoma. The Pioneers are 10-2 on the year and swept Southern Door its last time out on March 29th. Both teams have lost just once in conference play. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

There are several matches lined up this week ahead of the scheduled start of the WIAA Alternative Fall Season Tournament. On one side of the bracket, the first two rounds will be a Door County/Packerland Conference affair with Sevastopol battling Southern Door and Gibraltar playing Sturgeon Bay in Division 2. The winners will play a second time that same day for a chance to go to sectionals. In a different part of the bracket, Kewaunee and Algoma will face each other before potentially playing either Menominee Indian or Oneida Nation in the regional finals. The regional semis will start at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. with the championship taking place at 7 p.m.
