United burned by Blazers

Door County United's offensive struggles continued on Tuesday, falling to NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy 3-0.

After a scoreless first half, Abby Kirchner and Lexie Meerstein took over for the Blazers. Meerstein opened the scoring in the 58th minute before assisting on one of Kirchner's two goals after the 73 minute mark. "With ten minutes remaining in the game, we had to take some chances and shift to a formation with an aggressive offensive bias, which left us exposed in the back," Roedl said after the game. "Letting in the two late goals are just a reflection of taking chances going for the equalizer." Roedl was complimentary of Meerstein while crediting his own team's ability to create its own chances despite not being able to find the back of the net.

Pioneers baseball blows out Cougars

Two big innings helped the Sevastopol softball team end their game against Coleman early, beating the Cougars 12-2.

Addison Schauske led the way with four hits while Braelyn Staats collected three hits, and Kayla Ranly, Naomi Rikkola, and Sienna Cain each registered two hits in the win. Staats and Cain each had two RBI while Rikkola, Ranly, and Lexi Schopf all homered.

Schopf earned the win, allowing one run (1 ER) on three hits in her lone inning of work.

Pioneers baseball nipped by Lancers

The Sevastopol baseball team saw a win slip away on Tuesday, losing 4-3 to Manitowoc Lutheran.

Down 1-0 early, the Pioneers' Logan Schuh hit a three-run bomb to put the Pioneers up 3-1, only to see the Lancers tie the game up in the bottom half of the third inning. It would stay that way until the seventh inning when the Lancers' Will Franzen hit a sacrifice fly that brought home the game-winning run.

Schuh, Tyler Grooters, and Jack Haen collected hits for the Pioneers. Bo Tanck took the loss on the mound for the Pioneers, allowing one run (1 ER) on two hits across 1 2/3 innings.

Zephryrs run past United

A three-goal second half turned a close 1-0 match at the break into a 4-0 loss for Door County United against St. Mary Catholic.

The Zephyrs struck first in the 12th minute when Brecken Britzke scored off the rebound to make it 1-0. Maddy Mittelstaedt registered a brace for the Zephyrs with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half before Bitzy McCauley capped off the scoring in the 79th minute.

The United will look for their first win of the season on Tuesday when they play at home against NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy at 5 p.m. while the Zephyrs will face Door County's other soccer team, Sturgeon Bay, at home at 6 p.m.

Door County United visits St. Mary Catholic

The Door County United girls soccer team will take to the pitch on Monday to battle St. Mary Catholic.

The Zephyrs are battling similar demons in their season, opening the campaign with a 0-3-1 mark. They have been outscored 13-2 in their four matches, including an 8-2 loss to St. Mary's Springs.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Pioneers host yard sale in win over Panthers

The Sevastopol Pioneers softball team slugged five home runs in a 11-1 win over Reedsville on Thursday.

The Pioneers scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings with a Kayla Bubolz home run in the third inning the lone sign of resistance the Panthers put up against their hosts. Naomi Rikkola hit her first of three home runs in the first inning to bring home Kayla Ranly and Lexi Schopf. Rikkola repeated that feat under the same circumstances in the second inning, driving in Ranly and Schopf to make it 6-0. After tacking on two more runs in the third inning, Rikkola's solo shot in the fourth inning was followed up by a home run from Addison Schauske to make it 10-1. Schopf called game in the bottom of the fifth inning when she homered to reach the mercy rule threshold.

Schopf earned the win with one inning pitched, scattering one hit and striking out one. Schauske cleaned things up, pitching the final four innings. She allowed one run (1 ER) and two hits while striking out nine.

Big sixth downs Pioneers against Panthers

A six-run fifth inning took a close game and turned it into an 8-2 loss for Sevastopol against Reedsville on Thursday.

After allowing two runs in the first inning, the Pioneers cut the lead in half in the second inning when Logan Schuh was able to scamper at home on an error. The Pioneers saw the close contest slip away in the fifth thanks to five errors and two walks. Down 8-1, the Pioneers could only get one run back thanks to a Cash Kuehn fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Five different Pioneers collected hits, the loss marked by Andrew Wiesner, who allowed five runs (2 ER) on seven hits and three walks while striking out six across 4 1/3 innings.

Ranly, Rikkola lead Pioneers softball past Bulldogs

A familiar duo from the basketball season led the softball team to victory on Tuesday with Sevastopol beating Peshtigo 9-2.

The Pioneers scored three runs in the first inning with Naomi Rikkola clearing the bases on a triple before scoring on an Addison Schauske ground out. Stolen bases led to two more runs in the third inning before the Pioneers struck again in the fifth thanks to a pair of singles from the Rikkola sisters. An error helped the Bulldogs get onto the scoreboard, though that was quickly matched by a Kayla Ranly RBI single. The Bulldogs would score one more time to settle on the final score.

Ranly went 3-3 with one RBI while Rikkola finished 2-4 with three RBI. Schauske, who collected two RBI at the plate, earned the win from the circle allowing one run (1 ER) on five hits while striking out five.

Pioneers baseball edged by Bulldogs

The Sevastopol Pioneers baseball team saw a big lead disappear late as they lost 8-7 to Peshtigo on the road Tuesday evening.

The Pioneers put up three runs in each of the first two innings to build the 6-0 advantage. Logan Schuh, Aidan Isaksen, and Bo Tanck delivered extra-base hits to drive in the runs. After the Bulldogs took a bite out of the lead in the fifth with two runs, Jack Haen singled in a run to make it 7-2 entering the bottom of the sixth. With Cash Kuehn on the mound, the Bulldogs sent 10 batters up to the plate, registering five singles in the frame. The Pioneers went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game in heartbreak.

Tanck and Roman LeClair each posted two hits and two RBI in the game, with Isaksen, Haen, and Schuh chipping in with the other runs batted in. Three Bulldogs had multi-hit games, while Bryce Heroux earned the win on the mound, striking out 10 Pioneers.

Sevastopol golf welcomes Mishicot

The Sevastopol golf team will host a rare dual meet on Monday when Mishicot comes to the area.

The Pioneers took sixth place in last week's Packerland Conference opener at Cherry Hills Golf Course with a score of 215 strokes, 41 strokes behind Sturgeon Bay's winning tally. No Pioneers golfers were listed in the top six provided by the conference.

The Pioneers will return to Cherry Hills Golf Course to face the Indians at 3 p.m.

Sevastopol sweeps St. Mary's Triangular

No matter the St. Mary's, Sevastopol beat them on Saturday with a 17-13 decision against St. Mary's Springs and an 8-0 victory against St. Mary's Catholic.

In the first game, the Pioneers pounded out eight extra-base hits, including a homer from Addison Schauske and triples from Brynn Schartner and Naomi Rikkola. Schauske and Addison Sawyer had four RBI, while Rikkola posted three. Addison Schauske earned the win with three innings pitched, allowing eight hits, six earned runs, and one walk while posting two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Pioneers roped another six extra-base hits, including a home run and a double from Leah Schopf. She not only drove in three runs, Schopf was the winning pitcher as she allowed two hits and no runs across four innings with three strikeouts. Kayla Ranly was a perfect 2-2 with an RBI, while Rikkola, Schopf, and Schauske also had multi-hit games.

Pioneers softball sinks Vikings in five innings

The Sevastopol Pioneers softball team scored at least four runs in three consecutive innings to put Gibraltar/Washington Island away early 14-2 in five innings.

The Vikings struck first when Courtney Foy took Addison Schauske deep to make it 1-0. Schauske would get that run back herself when she drew a bases-loaded walk in the Pioneers' half of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Pioneers would put the throttle down in the second inning with five runs, boosted by a three-run inside-the-park homer by Naomi Rikkola. In the third, Kayla Ranly's run-scoring single started the rally, including another Rikkola homer and an RBI single by Lyvia Duessler. Abby Jarosh would take a nibble out of the lead with an RBI single in the fourth. Still, another four-run inning by the Pioneers effectively put the game on notice for the early dismissal thanks to extra-base hits by Rikkola and Dressler.

Schauske calmed down after the early homer to end her afternoon with the complete game win, allowing two runs (2 ER) and six hits while striking out 10. Rikkola went 3-4 with six RBI, while Duessler went 2-4 with four RBI. Isla Fagundes posted two hits in the loss for the Vikings. Emile Glocke allowed 14 runs (4 ER) on nine hits and five walks from the circle for the Vikings.

Pioneers softball holds off Bears

The Sevastopol Pioneers softball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held off a late rally to beat Bonduel 6-4.

After Naomi Rikkola stole home in the first inning to help the Pioneers jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Pioneers added three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to build the advantage. Two of the three runs in the third inning came off the bat of Rikkola's first homer of the season. The Bears would chip away beginning in the fifth inning with three runs, but they would only push across one more run the rest of the way.

Four different Pioneers registered hits including two apiece from Rikkola and Brynn Schartner. Addison Schauske kept things under control from the circle, allowing four runs (1 ER) on eight hits while striking out 13 batters.

Door County United soccer opens season against Manitowoc

The Door County United (Sevastopol/Gibraltar) soccer team will take the pitch for the first time this season when they travel to Manitowoc to battle the Ships.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Chris Roedl, the United look to improve on their 5-12-2 record last season that ended with a 5-0 loss to Wrightstown in the regional round of the WIAA Tournament. Eve Andreae, Caitlyn Fellner, Dasia Daubner, and Lanie Brauer are among the All-Packerland Conference performers from a season to go that could be running it back with the squad this year. The United had their first match of the season on Saturday postponed.

The Ships were able to get their first win of the season last Thursday as they shut out West De Pere 2-0.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. in Manitowoc at Ron Rubick Field.

Pioneers baseball shutout by Jets

The Sevastopol Pioneers baseball team could not push across a run in its 8-0 loss to Roncalli on Saturday.

The Jets posted at least two runs in the three different innings, helped out by two Pioneers errors. Aidan Isaksen, Bo Tanck, and Cash Kuehn registered the lone hits for the Pioneers. Tanck took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs (two earned) on two hits and five walks while striking out four.

Pioneers softball swept by Royals

The Sevastopol Pioneers softball team could not avenge the basketball team's loss to Assumption last month, falling to the Royals 5-1 and 6-3.

In game one, Kayla Ranly stole home in the top of the 7th inning for the Pioneers' lone run in the game. The Pioneers managed just two hits in the game. Addison Schauske struck out nine while allowing five runs (two earned) and six hits.

The Pioneers had a little more luck in the second game offensively, but a three run seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie to help give the Royals the sweep. Ranly, Schauske, and Sienna Cain registered RBI for the Pioneers.
