Pioneers Continue Run, Beat Southern Door

The Sevastopol Pioneers continued their early-season success with a 77–50 win over the Southern Door Eagles on Thursday night. The Pioneers improve to 3–0, while the Eagles drop to 0–2.

Early on, it was clear the Eagles are still finding their footing after losing a large senior presence, while the Pioneers are building on the momentum of their young roster. Sevastopol jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

That lead grew throughout the game, thanks in part to a large discrepancy on the boards, with the Pioneers nearly doubling the Eagles in second-chance opportunities. On top of that, Sevastopol forced nearly three dozen Eagle turnovers.

The Pioneers were led by longtime starter Zaul Valdivia, who finished with 20 points despite missing part of the second half with a minor injury. Close behind him was Damien Lardinois with 17. The Eagles continued last year’s trend of getting contributions from beyond their starting lineup, as Talon Mueller, Eli Jaden, and Ryker Lohrey each finished with 9.

Sevastopol has a quick turnaround, facing Green Bay Southwest on Saturday afternoon, while Southern Door gets a week off before taking on Sturgeon Bay on the road Friday night. The Southern Door vs. Sturgeon Bay game can be heard on U102.1, with Jacob Nate on the call starting at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show and tipoff at 7.
