The Southern Door Eagles defeated the Chilton Tigers 11-2 Tuesday night, but, as is often the case, the score does not tell the entire story.
Southern Door got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Alanah Kaye singled to score Grace Gutschow, who led off the inning with a walk. The Eagles added multiple runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Eagles’ defense was not given many chances to make plays, but that was a good thing with starting pitcher and winning pitcher Alanah Kaye in the circle. Kaye struck out 14 Tiger batters. The only blemishes against her came during extra innings that should not have happened.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs and a 9-0 lead.
Grace Gutschow came to the plate and, after a lengthy at-bat, drew a walk that appeared to bring home the game-sealing 10th run. However, in the excitement of the Regional semifinal walk-off walk, first base was never touched, allowing the Tigers to appeal and secure a forceout that wiped the game-winning run off the board.
The game went the full seven innings, with the Eagles winning 11-2 to earn a chance to host the Regional Final on Thursday evening against No. 4 seed Brillion.
