Eagles softball squeaks past Pioneers

It took only one inning to flip their game against Sevastopol as the Southern Door softball team went from a 4-0 deficit to a 5-4 win on Monday.

The Pioneers scored two times in the first inning on a Brynn Schartner homer and doubled their advantage in the third when Taylor Kochanski singled home one run and Kaile Vandenbogart walked home on another.

The script changed in the fourth inning as the Eagles piled up all five of their hits with Madyson Counard's three-run homer and Reese Vogel's bases-clearing double the frame's two big blows. The Pioneers had two on with two outs in the final two innings, but the Eagles wiggled off the hook both times to secure the win.

Lily Vandertie, Vogel, Counard, Harper Kramer, and Aubrey Plzak all had hits for the Eagles with Vogel and Counard registering the RBI. Alanah Kaye and Samantha Melville split pitching duties with Kaye earning the win (3 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5 K's).

The result spoiled two hit days from Sienna Cain and Kochanski while four others collected at least one hit as the Pioneers outhit the conferene champs 8-5. Leah Schopf took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (5 ER), on five hits while striking out five.

The Pioneers open tournament play on Thursday with a home game against Montello while the Eagles will prepare for their tournament opener next week with a Tuesday afternoon date at 4 p.m. against Winneconne in Brussels.
