Eagles Soar Past Clippers on U102.1

Southern Door was able to bolster its playoff resume and will stay in contention for possibly a share of the Packerland Conference Championship after taking down the Sturgeon Bay Clippers 42-17 on U102.1.

Sturgeon Bay grabbed an early lead after marching down the field on its opening drive when Bryce Plzak made a 25-yard field goal to put the Clippers up 3-0.  Southern Door answered back with a Drew Daoust 25-yard touchdown carry.  Daoust also carried in the 2pt conversion to give Southern Door its first lead, which the Eagles would not give back for the remainder of the game

Grant Weber would score the 1st of his three touchdowns on the Eagle's next possession but could not convert the 2 pt conversion, making the game 14-3.  After each team exchanged turnovers, Sturgeon Bay was forced to punt after another long drive, pinning the Eagles to their own 20.  On the first play of the ensuing drive, Daoust fumbled the handoff exchange, and Patrick Haese scooped the ball and scored from 15 yards out to make the score 14-9.  Southern Door would tack on one more touchdown after Daoust found Mason Paye for a touchdown catch and then again for the 2pt conversion with 0:06 left before halftime, giving the Eagles a 22-9 lead at halftime.

The second half was all Southern Door, as the Eagles added 20 more straight points on a pair of Grant Weber touchdowns that were spaced by an 80-yard fumble recovery for a score by Talon Mueller after Bryce Plzak coughed up the ball early in the 4th quarter.  Sturgeon Bay was able to cut into the lead towards the end of the 4th quarter after a long Bryce Plzak kick return, setting up a drive that was capped by a Patrick Haese 1-yard touchdown.  Haese added the 2-point conversion, making the score 42-17.  Southern Door was able to run out the clock to finish the game.

Sturgeon Bay will be on the road, traveling to Bonduel for a matchup against the Bears. The Bears are coming off a 53-6 win against Oconto to clinch a share of the Packerland Conference championship. Southern Door will return home for its Senior Night in the regular season finale against Mishicot, which can be heard on U102.1 next Friday.
