It was a tale of two very different halves on Thursday night as Kewaunee fell to Southern Door 37-20 in Brussels. The First half saw 49 points, and the second half saw 9.
A flurry of scoring took place in the first half, starting on the very first offensive play. Southern Door QB Drew Daoust found his WR Lauden Berg for a 75-yard passing touchdown to open the scoring. Kewaunee answered on their drive with a 36-yard touchdown run. Southern Door would answer the answer. Drew Daoust would run for a 37-yard touchdown on the following possession. The first quarter would end 14-7.
Each team would score twice in the second quarter. Southern Door scored first and last via Daoust throws—one to each of the Berg boys. Braylon Berg scored from 27 yards out, and Lauden Berg from 23 yards out. In between those scores came 2 more rushing touchdowns for the Storm. QB Brett Paulsen would rush one in from 21 yards away, and the next Storm possession, Waylon Delain ran it in from 19. The extra point after Delain's touchdown would be missed. The halftime score read 20-29, with Southern Door ahead.
The play(s) of the game came in the late stages of the third when the Storm, down just 9 at the time, would have a 1st and goal. Southern Door's defense came up big, getting a stop and a turnover on downs after both 3rd and 4th downs were taken from inside the 2-yard line.
Southern Door would cap the night off with a late 20-yard touchdown from Daoust to Mason Paye after the defender fell, sealing the victory with a 2-point conversion.
