Southern Door and Manitowoc Lutheran traded runs all game long, but it was the Lancers that had the last laugh in a 6-5 loss for the Eagles in the WIAA Tournament on Thursday.
The two teams held each other scoreless for the first two innings before the Eagles were able to break through in the third. Braylon Berg scored from second on a Tyler Neinas RBI single before Will Jandrin helped his own cause with an RBI single. The Lancers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 2-2 at the end of three.
The two teams would trade runs again in the fifth, beginning with Berg taking home on an errant pickoff throw from Logan Haupt to make it 3-2. Haupt would make up for his error, knocking in a run on a double to help the Lancers take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles would retake the lead in the sixth inning when Drew Daost took a pitch the other way to knock in Nick Beck before Gage Geisel was able to score on a passed ball. With the Eagles leading 5-4, pitcher Tyler Neinas had the Lancers down to their final out before Wesley Hecker and Haupt delivered the game-tying and eventual game-winning run on singles. Neinas would lead off the top of the seventh with a single, but he was caught stealing a couple pitchers later as the rest of the Eagles were retired in order.
Haupt earned the win for the Lancers, registering six strikeouts over the final four innings while allowing four runs on two hits. Neinas took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two.
