Eagles baseball soar over Oconto with doubleheader sweep

In a baseball doubleheader at Brussels on Tuesday afternoon, Southern Door took
two games from Oconto.

Game 1 saw Oconto take a 1-0 lead in the top of
the 1st inning, but a Christian Counard 2-RBI single in the bottom of the 1st put Southern Door on top 2-1. The Eagles would add 3 more runs for a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd, highlighted by a Derek Schinktgen 2-run HR.  Oconto countered with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd to cut the margin to 5-3. The Eagles
would then take control of the game with a 5-run 5th inning, and then ended the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, making the final score 13-3.

The Eagles 14-hit attack was led by Alec Guilette and Tyler Neinas
with 3 hits each, with Neinas driving in 4 runs on his 2 doubles and a single.  Jack Peterson, Jaden Diller, and Counard provided support with 2 hits each. Tyler Neinas earned the win, allowing only 3 hits in his 6-inning complete game.

Neinas struck out 8 and walked 2.

A tightly contested game 2 saw Christian Counard score after his 2nd inning lead-off double to give Southern Door a 1-0 lead. A solo HR by Jack Peterson leading off the top of the 3rd inning provided the Eagles with a 2-0 lead. Oconto would cut the lead in half with a 4th inning run, but Southern Door immediately answered in the top of the 5th behind a Neinas RBI double and a Diller RBI single for a 4-1 lead. The Blue Devils took one last run at the Eagles when Conner Christensen led off the bottom of the 7th with a triple.

At that point, Jaden Diller relieved starter Christian Counard, and though the rally continued with a walk and an infield hit, Diller preserved the 4-3 win with a strikeout, leaving the tying run stranded at 3rd base.  The game two pitching win went to Christian Counard. In his 6+innings of work, Counard struck out 10, walked 1, and hit 1 batter. He only allowed 3 hits in earning the victory.

The two wins leave SD with an (11-1) season record, (10-0) in the
Packerland Conference.  The Eagles travel to Winneconne for a Saturday non-conference doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.

Monday will see the Eagles travel to Kewaunee for a showdown with the two remaining undefeated Packerland Conference
teams.
