Coach reflects on Southern Door wrestling season finale

The end of our wrestling season came a week earlier than we had hoped. On Saturday, our wrestlers competed at the individual sectionals in Oconto Falls and neither qualified for the State Tournament.  Trevor will be back but for Brodie Overbeck it was the end of a career.

Brodie's first match was against #4 ranked Marcus Matti of Tomahawk.  Both wrestlers were close to scoring in the first period but neither was able to score.  After a scoreless first period Brodie chose bottom and earned a quick escape for the first point of the match.  In the third period Matti chose bottom and earned an escape to tie the match at 1-1.  Then, with about 30 seconds left in the match, Brodie lost a takedown and couldn't get away ending the match 1-3.  In the Consolation Semi Brodie faced Anthony Kujawa from Adams Freindship.  Kujawa is currently ranked #8.  Scoring stared with Brodie being awarded a penalty point in the first period.  He then earned an escape and a takedown to head into the third period up 4-1.  In the third period Kujawa chose bottom and earned an escape to make the score 4-2.  Kujawa pushed hard and caught Brodie in a head and arm throw to get the pin and end Brodie's season.

After 3 years competing at 285 Brodie came into the season leaner and stronger than in past seasons.  He chose to compete at 220 most of this season and was in almost every match all season long.  Brodie is a competitor, always pushing and learning.  He was able to do a lot of things most other upper weight wrestlers can't do.  He became very good at his double leg and could takedown almost anyone.  He ended his career with an 84-65 record mostly at 285.  He has always been a great teammate.  He has also been a mentor and role model to some of the younger wrestlers.  I think Brodie will miss wrestling but his love is football and he plans to play at Stevens Point next season.

At 132 Trevor started out with a nice win over a relatively unknown Talon Armatoski from Amherst.  Trevor scored the first takedown and kept the pressure for the entire match earning a 8-4  win.  In the semi final Trevor faced Austin Schmallenberg from New London.  The two faced each other in a tournament just after Christmas where Trevor lost a 5-0 match.  This time Trevor scored the first takedown and took the 2-0 lead into the second period.  In the second period Trevor chose bottom.  He missed some opportunities and didn't get the escape or reversal and ended the period still up 2-0.  In the third period Schmallenberg chose bottom and earned a reversal to tie the score 2-2.  About mid way through the third Schamllenberg earned a decisive near fall on a tilt and rode out the rest of the period ending the match 2-5.  In the consolation semi Trevor faced another familiar opponent in Ethan Brissette of Peshtigo.  The two faced each other at Oshkosh on the Water and in conference.  Brissette had the upper hand in both matches 5-2 and 5-0.  Yesterday Trevor scored the first takedown and it looked like he might get the upper hand in another close match.  Unfortunately Brissette caught Trevor in the third period on a throw and ended the match with a pin.

This was Trevor's second trip to sectionals.  Last year he had a 7-9 record, with little competition due to Covid, and this year he finished 31-21.  This season he has definitely improved which is something he can build from for next season.  We'll look to continue improving but specifically being more consistent and offensive from every position.

Thank you for all your support this season,

Coach Englebert
