Saturday was the start of the State Wrestling Tournament Series.  Southern Door competed in the D2 regional at Two Rivers.

 

Southern Door competed in the D2 regional at Two Rivers.  Congratulations to Trevor Englebert and Brodie Overbeck who both placed second in their weight classes and qualified for the Sectional Tournament next Saturday in Oconto Falls.

 

Trevor started the day with a bye and then a convincing win in the semi's.  In the semifinal Trever started with a takedown and near fall to build a lead.  In the second period he used a nice inside trip to get the fall and move into the finals.  In the finals Trevor was wrestling a good match against Delebreau but was caught in the third to finish second.

 

Brodie also started the day with a bye.  In the semifinal Brodie earned the first takedown and a reversal to you up 4-1.  In the third period he had trouble getting away from VanDonsel's leg ride but he was able to avoid any near fall and earn the win.  In the finals Brodie was not himself.  He seemed a bit slow and was behind right from the beginning.  He can do much better next week.

 

There is a lot of history that clearly shows this to be the toughest regional in the state and this year was no different.  Teams competing were Brillion, Denmark, Luxemburg, Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, Two Rivers and Wrightstown.  Team rankings currently have Luxemburg ranked #3, Brillion #4 and Denmark as honorable mention.  

 

After 5 years in D3 this was our first year back in D2.  I'm often asked if I think it is harder to get to sate in D2.  In my opinion, this is the toughest regional win but once you get to sectionals it all evens out.  To make it to state and make it on the podium I don't feel there is much difference between the divisions.  The best wrestlers always rise to the occasion.

 

The unfortunate part of regionals every year is the end of a career.  This year we have two seniors ending their wrestling careers.  Thomas Grosbeier and Riley Phillips.  Both started wrestling in middle school but really got involved in high school.  They have been part of our wrestling family all through high school.  They are great teammates and will be missed.  Thomas will be joining the Marines this August and Riley will be attending Fox Valley Tech.  Best of luck to both of them.
