The Milwaukee Brewers survived a dramatic ninth inning Friday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 at American Family Field to take a 1-0 lead in their first World Series appearance since 1982.
Milwaukee wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Jackson Chourio opened the bottom of the first with a single before Christian Yelich drove him home with an RBI triple into the gap. William Contreras followed with a run-scoring single through the infield to give the Brewers an early 2-0 advantage. Contreras finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Tampa Bay answered in the fourth inning after a leadoff walk issued by Jacob Misiorowski came around to score on a Liam Hicks groundout, cutting Milwaukee’s lead to 2-1.
Misiorowski worked five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three. Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby combined for three scoreless innings to preserve the lead.
Milwaukee added a crucial insurance run in the seventh when Chourio delivered an RBI single to score Cooper Pratt, extending the advantage to 3-1 heading into the ninth.
That’s when things got interesting.
Closer Trevor Megill loaded the bases with one out before Hicks grounded into what appeared to be a game-ending double play. The Brewers celebrated, the crowd erupted and postgame equipment was already being wheeled onto the field.
However, after a lengthy replay review, officials ruled Pratt had pulled his foot off second base early, overturning the force out and allowing another Rays run to score.
With Milwaukee’s lead cut to 3-2, runners on second and third and two outs, Megill returned to the mound and struck out Jonny DeLuca swinging to finally secure the victory.
The win puts Milwaukee three victories away from its first World Series championship, 44 years after its last appearance in 1982.
The Brewers will look to take a commanding series lead when they host the Rays for Game 2 on Saturday, Oct. 24, at American Family Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
