Third-period struggles cost Gamblers in loss to Sioux City

Category: Local Sports

The Green Bay Gamblers entered the third period trailing by just one goal Friday night, but a five-goal final period from the Sioux City Musketeers turned a close game into a 6-1 loss at the Tyson Events Center.

After a scoreless opening period, Sioux City broke through midway through the second when Sypniewski scored at the 11:03 mark to give the Musketeers a 1-0 advantage heading into the final period.

Sioux City doubled its lead just 2:32 into the third on a goal from Bednar, but Green Bay responded just over a minute later. Pajor scored his second goal of the season on the power play, with McKinney picking up the assist, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Gamblers' comeback hopes were short-lived, however, as Anderson answered just 49 seconds later to restore Sioux City's two-goal advantage.

From there, the Musketeers took over. Brauti scored at 8:01, Jones added a power-play goal at 10:25 and Spagnuolo capped the scoring less than two minutes later to complete the five-goal period.

Green Bay struggled to generate offense throughout the night, finishing with just 12 shots on goal compared to Sioux City's 35. Novotny made 29 saves in the loss, while Severgardh stopped 11 of 12 shots for the Musketeers.

The Gamblers finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while Sioux City converted one of its three opportunities.
