It required an extra period for the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team to lose its first Horizon League game of the season Wednesday, falling to Cleveland State 83-82 in overtime.
After playing to an 18-18 draw in the first quarter, the Vikings outscored the Phoenix 16-12 in the second to take a four-point lead into the locker room. They extended that lead to nine points in the third quarter before the Phoenix went on a 12-0 run to grab a 44-41 advantage. The two teams played evenly the rest of regulation, requiring overtime to settle the score. As it has in recent games in Ohio, the Phoenix had a chance to win on its final possession, but its luck ran out when Jenna Guyer’s game-winning attempt rimmed out, giving the Vikings the win.
Maddy Skorupski paced the Phoenix with a season-high 25 points, while Kristina Ouimette added a career-high 18 and Jenna Guyer contributed 12. The Vikings had three players eclipse 20 points in the win, led by Colbi Maples’ 26.
The Phoenix return home Saturday for a matinee against Northern Kentucky. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
