Slow start dooms Phoenix women

A 21-7 first-quarter deficit proved to be too much for the Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team to overcome in a 76-59 loss to Richmind in Friday's Cancun Challenge action.

It was not until the fourth quarter that the Phoenix could trim the deficit, outscoring the Spiders 19-15 in the final stanza. The Spiders did their damage behind the arc, making 14 three-pointers compared to just five for the Phoenix. They also registered four more assists (15-11) and grabbed eight more rebounds (34-26). Jenna Guyer led the Phoenix with 16 points off the bench while Maddy Skorupski added 11 points in the loss. The Spiders, meanwhile, had four players reach double figures, including 25 points from Maggie Doogan.

The Phoenix will begin Horizon League play next Thursday when they play Northern Kentucky on the road before returning to the Kress Events Center to battle Youngstown State.
