For the first time in the Doug Gottlieb era, the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team has won two game in a row after closing their Paradise Jam residency with an 80-75 win over Iona.
The two teams traded extended runs in the first half with the Phoenix taking a brief lead thanks to a 10-0 run only to see the Gaels take it right by 8-0 run of their own. Trailing 36-33 at the break that got extended out to 41-33 in the opening minutes of the second half, the Phoenix scored eight consecutive points to tie the game. After the team traded baskets, Justin Allen took over for the Phoenix with eight consecutive points en route to a game-high 28 points to give the team a lead they would not give up despite strong efforts by the Gaels to do so.
Three other Phoenix players cracked double-figures in the fourth-place game including C.J. O'Hara adding 17 points, Mac Wrecke contributing 14 points off the bench, and Caden Wilkins tacking on 10 points. It was the second straight game the Phoenix had to survive without Marcus Hall. The Gaels boasted five players in double figures, including 14 points from Lamin Sabally.
The Phoenix men return home on Saturday to host Haskell Indian Nations at the Kress Center at 1 p.m.
