Gamblers edge Capitols in shootout thriller

The Green Bay Gamblers earned a hard-fought 4-3 shootout victory over the Madison Capitols Friday night at Bob Suter’s LEGACY20 Arena in Middleton.

Green Bay and Madison traded goals through the first two periods, with the Gamblers striking first on a tally from Jakub Rozsíval in the opening frame. Madison answered shortly after, and the teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1.

The second period saw plenty of action. Madison briefly regained the lead early before Nate Knutson tied things up with a shorthanded goal, his third of the season. Ethan Drabicki followed with his fourth goal of the year, assisted by Knutson and Drew Timm, giving Green Bay a 3-2 edge. Madison responded late in the period to even the score at 3-3 heading into the third.

Neither team could break through in the final frame or overtime, sending the contest to a shootout. Cam Katz and Jared Wooten converted for Green Bay, while goaltender Jack Slavick shut the door to secure the win. Slavick stopped 24 of 27 shots in regulation and overtime, improving to 3-4-1 on the season.

Green Bay moves to 7-6-1-0 on the year with the victory and will return to the Resch Center on Saturday night to complete the weekend series against Madison.
