Despite trailing early and being outhit 6-4, Maplewood sent Institute to its third straight loss Sunday with a 4-1 win.
A fielder's choice helped the Cubs take the early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a two-run shot by Kody Kissinger in the third inning gave the Mets a lead they would not surrender. The Mets added single tallies in the fourth and eighth innings as insurance to improve their season record to 2-1.
Adam Gutschow led the Mets with two of the Mets' four hits, with Kissinger and Jaden Diller responsible for the others. Sam Zirbel did his best for the Cubs on the mound, allowing four runs (3 ER) on four hits while striking out seven. The combination of Will Jandrin and Jeremiah Jahnke was a little bit better as they combined to allow one run (1 ER) on six hits while striking out nine. Frankie Ash, Robbie Pollman, Quinn Schram, Nick Peterson, Caleb Hoffman, and Zirbel all got hits for the Cubs in the loss.
