The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team's loss to Cleveland State not only dropped them to 2-8 on the season, but prompted several questions about the state of the team on Saturday.

 

At the Resch Center, Cleveland State's bench outscored the Phoenix men 45-20 as they won the game 83-61. With head coach Doug Gottlieb choosing not to play his star player Anthony Roy due to philosophical differences, Foster Wonders and Mac Wrecke each tallied 10 points while Jeremiah Johnson chipped in nine points in the loss. After the game, Gottlieb would not discuss the specifics as to why his star player was benched, but compared the situation to building a house. 

 

“It’s like if you build a house — that’s what we’re doing, we’re building a house. And if you go like, ‘Wow, you know, the foundation, well we can save money here, we save money there. You get one chance at a dream home. It’s my dream home. I’m building it. I’m going to spend the extra time and extra expense and do it the right way," Gottlieb said.

 

Roy did go into specifics on social media, saying his benching stemmed from him missing a morning shootaround. He was contrite in his post saying that "sitting out against Cleveland State was a very humbling experience. From here on out, I’m committed to holding myself to the highest standard. Not just in how I play, but in how I carry myself as a teammate and as a representative of this program. To my teammates and coaches, thank you for holding me accountable. I’ll do everything I can to lead by example from this point forward.”

 

Gottlieb accepted the apology, signaling its time to move forward and focus on their game against Milwaukee on Wednesday.
