Both Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams picked up their first wins of the season on Wednesday night in Illinois.
In Macomb, Ill., the Phoenix men nearly led wire-to-wire in an 87-73 win over Western Illinois. An 8-0 run sparked the Phoenix's offense to build a lead of over 20 points before the Leathernecks could cut into the lead late. Thanks to eight made three-pointers, Anthony Roy led the Phoenix with 35 points. Jeremiah Johnson chipped in 15 points, and Foster Wonders scored 11 in the victory. It was head coach Doug Gottlieb's first official win as a Division 1 basketball coach.
In Chicago, the Phoenix women needed a 15-0 run late to knock down the UIC Flames 74-71. The team fell behind early for a third consecutive game, finding itself down 26-18 after the first quarter despite jumping out to an 8-0 lead at the opening whistle. The Phoenix chipped away at it during the second quarter before outscoring their hosts 22-12 in the final stanza. Maddy Schreiber led the way with 25 points, while Natalie McNeal (15 points) and Jenna Guyer (11 points) made big buckets and critical free throws late to preserve the victory.
The Phoenix men will travel to Providence for a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday, while the women play at North Dakota at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
