Early drama was quickly replaced in the sixth and seventh innings as Washington Island beat Institute 12-4 to earn a chance to play for the fourth-seed of the Door County League playoffs.
The two teams traded runs through the fourth inning, each tallying three runs. The Islanders took control in the sixth inning when they scored on a fielder's choice, an error, and a wild pitch to make it 6-3. They would blow the game wide open in the seventh inning thanks to a two-RBI single from Ray McDonald and a three-run blast from Luke Geiger. Each team would tally one additional run after that, but the Cubs' efforts were not enough to play spoiler.
The Islanders were led by McDonald, who scored three hits and three RBIs. Geiger drove four runs on two hits, while Matt Petersilka also registered a pair of hits. Jon Kordon won in relief as he pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger pitched well in his five innings, striking out six while allowing one run on three hits.
Frankie Ash, Robbie Pollman, Nick Peterson, and Zach Christenson all had two hits in the loss for the Cubs. Chase Haberli took the loss for the Cubs as he gave up six runs (4 ER) on six hits across 5 2/3 innings.
The Islanders will now face Egg Harbor on Sunday to decide who gets to play in the playoffs as the number four seed.
