Islanders Handle A's to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive on 105.1 The GOAT

In a game that both teams needed to win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Washington Island Islanders took care of business Sunday, beating the Baileys Harbor A's 15-3. The loss officially knocks the A's out of the playoff picture. The Islanders remain in a tie for the fourth playoff spot entering the season's final week.

The Islanders jumped to a lead in the top of the first when the leadoff hitter, Caleb Cornell, doubled. He would reach home after a pair of fielding errors by A's third baseman Aaron Brey.  Those would be the first of many errors the A's would commit on the day.  The Islander offense showed patience throughout the game, sending 9+ batters to the plate in an inning in the 2nd and 8th innings. In the bottom of the 1st, the A's leadoff man, River Pawelski, would double off John Kordon but be stranded at third.

From that point on, retiring the next 13 batters, Kordon would lock things down, including back-to-back-to-back three up, three down innings. Kordon would pitch five innings of shutout ball, giving up three hits while recording 8 K's. The most efficient inning for the A's came in the 4th when the Islanders could only send four men to the plate unless you count the 9-hole hitter Cam Munao stepping to the plate out of order.  Alex Johnson should have been the batter, and when things were corrected, Johnson stepped to the plate with a 1-0 count in his favor but would strikeout, ending the frame.

The A's were able to close the gap in the 6th and 7th innings, cutting the Islanders' lead from 8-0 to 8-5, but a 7-run top of the 8th inning followed by a three up, three down the bottom of the inning sent the game to an early ending.
