Ports shut out Cubs

West Jacksonport jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, taking the rain-delayed contest 6-0 Sunday afternoon in Institute.

The Ports opened the game with three straight hits, including a Woody Schartner double that brought home the first run. A sacrifice fly and another RBI single later made it 3-0 Ports early. Drew Tanck's RBI groundout in the second inning made it 4-0 in the second inning before the Ports added additional runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Tanck would end his day going 2-3 with two RBI, with Riley Cordier also driving in a run on two hits. Derek Niewdzwicki batted in the other run for the Ports.

The Cubs were silenced by Tanck, Schartner, and Luke Steebs, who allowed just five hits while striking out nine. Brent Haberli and Caleb Hoffman each got two hits, while Frankie Ash had the other. Josh Pflieger took the loss for the Cubs, allowing all six runs (4 ER) across 5 2/3 innings while striking out three.
