Rockers break season-opening skid

The Green Bay Rockers snapped their season-long losing skid on Thursday, beating the Madison Mallards 5-3.

The pitching wasn't sharp as the teams combined to walk two dozen batters and allow 12 hits. The two teams traded two runs in the first inning with the Rockers doubling up the Mallards in the second inning with another two runs. An insurance run in the fifth inning proved to be important when the Mallards rallied in the ninth, scoring one run but stopped short of completing.

Luke Mueller went 2-4 with two RBI for the Rockers in the win, joined by three others who knocked in at least run. Connor Nolen earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of work, allowing three walks and two hits but kept the Mallards scoreless while striking out four.

The Rockers head down to Fond du Lac for a date with the Dock Spiders Friday night for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
