The Green Bay Packers are not going anywhere, but the marriage between the city and the organization is straining after the two stopped lease extension talks this week.

 

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette's Richard Ryman, the Packers' proposal would give the city $45 million through 2062, compared with $81.3 million under terms of the existing lease. The Packers would receive $36 million in total from the annual escalation, or an average of $1.2 million per year, compared with more than $5 million annually now. The organization says they would invest another $1.5 billion into Lambeau Field over the coming two decades and would also like some flexibility heading into the upcoming collective bargaining agreement with the players' union in 2030.

 

The city wants to keep getting the money they are getting under the current lease agreement, if not more. They would also like to see the Packers invest in community development in the City of Green Bay in addition to the team's current efforts in neighboring Ashwaubenon as well as try to host larger events such as concerts, soccer matches, and non-Packers football games.

 

Both sides are confident that something will be worked out before the end of the current lease, but one side effect of the impasse is the Packers holding off on approximately $80 million in renovations for Lambeau Field in addition to scaling back its charitable efforts.
