Phoenix women cruises past Panthers

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team made sure history did not repeat itself on Thursday, using a 16-5 run in the third quarter to throttle in-state rival 76-53.

The Phoenix and Panthers traded leads in the first 15 minutes of the matchup, but a 14-2 run to end the second quarter gave the Phoenix a ten-point lead at the break. The aforementioned third quarter put the game out of reach for the Panthers, who would trail by as much as 30 points in the fourth quarter before a late run closed the gap. The Phoenix forced 19 turnovers in the game and had five more rebounds than the Panthers.

Maddy Schreiber led the Phoenix with a career-high 23 points. while Jasmine Kondrakiewicz added 16 points and Natalie McNeal contributed 13 points in the victory. It was the first time in four years that the Phoenix won their Horizon League opener, which included a couple of disappointing visits to Milwaukee.

They travel to Chicago on Tuesday to face DePaul in a matinee.
