Phoenix women clinch home tournament, men tie dubious mark

The Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams had mixed results in their final weekend of the regular season on Thursday.

On the women's side, Sydney Levy hit six threes to pace the Phoenix with 18 points in a 73-57 win over IPFW. The two teams were back and forth in the early going before the Phoenix went on a 12-3 run in the latter stages of the second quarter to keep the Mastodons at a distance the rest of the way. That was even with the Mastodons going on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to threaten the Phoenix Hailey Oskey and Callie Genke also reached double figures for the Phoenix. The win gives the Phoenix a first-round bye and a home game in the Horizon League Tournament before it transitions to Indianapolis. They end their regular season against Cleveland State Saturday.

For the men, the Phoenix outscored UIC 38-20 in the paint, but it was not enough in an 81-77 loss. Kamari McGee continued his impressive freshman campaign with 20 points with three other Phoenix players scoring in double digits. The Phoenix would get it close a few times, but an 8-0 run by the Flames in the first half and 16-4 stretch in the second half all but doomed them. It was the 24th loss of the season for the Phoenix men, which ties them with the 1984-1985 squad for the most losses in a single season. To avoid setting the record, they will have to beat an IUPUI squad that had to have an open tryout earlier this year to fill out its roster. It did manage to beat Robert Morris last week, a team the Phoenix lost to on the road.
