Packers back on primetime football on Sunday

The Green Bay Packers and San Francisco will renew their rivalry that’s had a good run in recent years on Sunday night. Unlike last year’s meeting, San Francisco will be much closer to full strength. The Packers won the 2020 matchup by a 34-17 final score. The teams most notable matchups in recent years came in 2019, when Green Bay and San Francisco topped the NFC standings. San Francisco throttled Green Bay 37-8 in the regular season and 37-20 in the NFC Championship game.

Sunday’s game comes with an interesting backstory on the sidelines, as Packers head coach Matt Lafleur goes back with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. The two were on staff together in Houston, Washington, and Atlanta.

The Packers will be without star pass rusher Za’Darius Smith for the second week in a row, and on Saturday they placed tight end Dominique Daffney on injured reserve, and he’ll officially be out for at least three weeks. Perhaps the biggest loss for the Packers will be the absence of offensive line utility weapon, Elgton Jenkins. He’s listed as out for Sunday night’s matchup as he’s been filling in for David Bakhtiari for the beginning part of the season as Bakhtiari recovers from a torn ACL. It has not been determined who will be the starter at left tackle for Green Bay, but they’ll have their hands full with all-star pass rusher Nick Bosa.

The Packers are 1-1 so far this season, and the 49ers are 2-0. Sunday’s game will begin at 7:20 PM.
