A student-athlete at University of Wisconsin and two alums secured their spot for their home countries olympic roster in their respective sport this weekend and will compete in Tokyo next month. Freshman swimmer Phoebe Bacon, who is coming off an NCAA title in the 200-yard backstroke, finished second in the Team USA trials and qualified to represent the United States, competing in the same event. Bacon is 18 years old and came to the Badgers from Maryland. 

 

Zach Ziemek, a 2016 graduate, qualified for the Olympics a second time. Ziemek makes it back to the games in the decathlon, placing third in the event with ten components at the U.S. trials in Eugene, Oregon. Ziemek won the long jump and triple jump. Ziemek is a native of Itasca, Illinois. 

 

A Badger by way of Canada will represent the provinces in the Tokyo games. Georgia Ellenwood will be performing for Team Canada in the heptathlon. Ellenwood won the gold medal at an event hosted in Germany to qualify. Ellenwood is a 2018 graduate and a former NCAA Outdoor heptathlon champion. 

 

Kenny Bednarek from Rice Lake almost qualified in the 100 meter run when he took fourth place on Sunday. Bednarek will run an event he specializes in, the 200 meter run, on June 27th. The  Olympic games, which were rescheduled in 2020 due to the pandemic, are scheduled for July 23rd through August 8th.
