Milwaukee Brewers reliever Devin Williams is finalist for NL Rookie of the Year

National League Reliever of the Year Devin Williams of the Milwaukee Brewers has been nominated for National League Rookie of the Year. The right-hander is one of three finalists that have been selected by Baseball Writers Association of America, Alec Bohm who is the Philadelphia Phillies third/first baseman and infielder San Diego Padres Jake Cronenworth are among others. Williams allowed only one earned run in 22 appearances, while he racked up 53 strikeouts over 27 innings, good for an impressive 0.33 ERA. The secret to Williams' success is in his change-up. Sports Illustrated conducted research on Williams dominating changeup, the average MLB changeup has a spin rate of 1,700-1,800 rpm; Williams’s average is 2,800-3,000. Contrasting hitters are batting only .032 against his change-up, and it has a 61.1% miss rate. He throws it over 52% of the time. Williams has high hopes for NL Rookie of the Year, the last season a Brewer player won this award was in 2007 by Ryan Braun, who was a third baseman at the time. The voting will be finalized on Monday, November 9th for both the NL and AL leagues.
