WIAA Approves Track and Field Rules, Non-School Competition Accommodations

At its October meeting on Friday, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved two track and field recommendations made by coaches along with providing flexibility when it comes to non-school competitions during the spring and alternate fall sports seasons in 2020-2021.

One of the track and field regulations this year is, “for relay exchanges that do not occur in assigned lanes, the line-up position is determined and maintained when the incoming runners reach the straightaway before the exchange.” The second recommendation approved extends the sunset clause used to determine divisional placement. This allows for the second year of required data collection that couldn’t be completed last year due to the cancellations of COVID-19.

As for non-school competition events, the Board decided that girls soccer will be allowed two non-school competitions. Baseball and softball will be allowed three of these competitions while boys soccer, boys volleyball, and girls volleyball will be allowed four. Hosting parties for these events must distribute the tickets evenly between the teams involved and should enforce social distancing of at least six feet. The hosting party has the option to find a different location to help with the capacity and if they can’t find an alternate location, they should reach out to the WIAA immediately. The host shall also meet with their local health department on whether they can meet the spectator requirements or not.

The Winter Sports Guidelines were also approved at Friday’s meeting.
