Category: Local Sports

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team avenged its loss against Providence Academy on Monday night, earning a 3-1 victory against the Paladins in front of its home crowd on U-102.1.

Both teams got off to a fast start, with Kellan Landes scoring in the game's third minute for the Paladins while Finn Stevenson responded 45 seconds later to tie the game at one. For the next 50 minutes, the two teams were tied up in a battle of possession, with the Clippers holding onto the ball for much of the first half while the Paladins controlled the action in the opening minutes of the second half.

The action shifted in favor of the Clippers after the 50th minute after they drew fouls by the Paladins. Coming off their second free kick of the half, Isaiah Eliason found the loose ball in the box and put it behind Paladins goalkeeper Reuban Stauder in the 54th minute for what proved to be the game-winning tally.

The Clippers resisted the Paladins' pressure and gave themselves an insurance goal in the  73rd minute when Joni Ismali settled the ball and immediately fired it on net to make it 3-1.

Sauder ended his evening with 14 saves for the Paladins while Ross Spritka made five saves for the Clippers in the win that put the team back in the conversation for a share of the Packerland Conference crown. The Clippers ended up having a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks in the match.

The Clippers are back in action on Thursday when they host Seymour for a non-conference match. Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 6:30 p.m. The Paladins host Algoma on Thursday at 4 p.m.
