Sturgeon Bay turned in a series of strong performances at a WIAA sectional meet Friday, earning one state qualifier and several top-10 finishes against a competitive field.
Cedar Tomberlin led the way for Sturgeon Bay, securing a trip to the WIAA State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse. Tomberlin placed third in the triple jump with a personal-record leap of 43 feet, 2.75 inches. He also competed in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing ninth in 16.78 seconds.
Talia Schmidt posted a seventh-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 6 inches, while teammate Oliver Carmody also competed in the event.
Rayshaune Johnson narrowly missed a finals berth in the 100-meter dash, placing ninth with a time of 11.42 seconds.
In distance competition, Delaney Skiba represented Sturgeon Bay in the 3,200-meter run, clocking in at 12 minutes, 59.32 seconds.
Genevieve Austad rounded out the Clippers’ efforts in the field events, competing in the long jump and recording a top mark of 15 feet, 2 inches.
Sturgeon Bay will now turn its attention to the state meet, where Tomberlin will compete among Wisconsin’s top athletes next week in La Crosse.
